L’Express VIP teased us with a new interview for Rob. The content is available to subscribers so if anyone has a subscription, please let us now. For now I’m just going to enjoy this HQ photo with the following blurb (Translation by us with the help of Google Translate):
Not only is the British actor accustomed to independent productions and blockbusters, like his next film Batman, but he is also the face of the new eau de toilette for Dior Homme. So many opportunities to meet him…
Beautiful, yes, but not only that… Robert Pattinson worked hard to get rid of the heartthrob image that stuck with him after the “Twilight” saga. The Brit has starred in multiple independent films with tortured roles gaining him a reputation for liking “strange” projects: a mad lighthouse keeper in “The Lighthouse” (2019), a prisoner in space in Claire Denis’s “High Life”… From the evanescent vampire, there’s not much left. At the age of 33, his muscular figure gives him a very human presence, very useful in the next “Batman” by Matt Reeves (released in 2021). He will also star in Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet,” an action and spy film, and Antonio Campos’ “The Devil All The Time.”
Full interview after the cut
How do you choose which projects you participate in?
ROBERT PATTINSON: My criterion is the director. This year, I wanted to take on a major production, it hadn’t happened to me in a long time. On the set of Christopher Nolan’s “Tenetâ€, everything was giant: the set is a whole city, thousands of people are involved. But Christopher nevertheless manages to create an intimate atmosphere on the set: there is only one producer present, and only one control screen. It’s like an independent film.
Do you watch movies that come out?
ROBERT PATTINSON: I watch everything, but only between shoots. I’m influenced by what I see, it’s dangerous. If I like a film, I immediately think: “This is how I should act!†So, when I work, I only watch documentaries, true crime documentaries, which are very addictive. On the other hand, I listen to a lot of music: on “Tenetâ€, British drill, a kind of rap that helped me build my character, as a complement to the screenplay.
Are you an actor who likes a challenge?
ROBERT PATTINSON: I like fear, it’s a very nice feeling… at first. And then it quickly becomes horrible! It’s the same with every movie. I try things, I think a lot, and then I think, “I can’t do this, I have no idea how to play this.†It’s only after you’ve hit rock bottom that everything gets better. People around me find that very annoying. But it doesn’t work every time. For ‘The King’ [by David Michôd, produced by Netflix, in which he plays the Dauphin of France], I tried to adopt a French accent. I was very sure of myself, I thought it would be funny. But on the first take, it was a big flop! Like when you tell a joke and nobody laughs.
Is it important to change your look to enter a character?
ROBERT PATTINSON: Very important. I hate playing someone who looks like me: it makes me uncomfortable. Besides, I never use my normal voice when I play, it’s not something I control. For ‘The King’, I had seen a picture of Lily-Rose Depp’s hairstyle [she plays Catherine de Valois, editor’s note] and I thought that my character would also like to look like a princess, with long hair and braids… I’m surprised they let me do it! On the set of “The Devil All The Timeâ€, the hairdressers had pinned these photos of fifties singers with hair full of hairspray. I wonder how we got the idea to think that was beautiful… Anyway, I like extreme changes.
Do you enjoy getting ready for an event?
ROBERT PATTINSON: When I’ve had enough sleep and time and everything fits perfectly, it’s great. But that happens 20% of the time. Usually, I wear the wrong outfit, I have weird socks… I’d love to be organized, I’m late for everything.
In Dior’s film, Leonard Cohen’s song, “I’m Your Manâ€, is about a man who shows his vulnerability: do you think that’s modern?
ROBERT PATTINSON: When you accept it, you’re already stronger. It’s like fear, if you learn to tame it, you end up being attracted to frightening things. It becomes very satisfying, you feel like you’re capable of anything.
You are boxing and dancing in the new Dior Homme commercial… And in your life?
ROBERT PATTINSON: I’ve been boxing for many years, and I like to dance when I’m alone. If I’m surrounded, it becomes a nightmare! I feel more naked when I dance than when I’m undressed. I’ve already taken lessons, but I come out of them very angry…
What smell do you like the most?
ROBERT PATTINSON: The smell of an In-N-Out fast food burger just as I arrive at the airport in Los Angeles, the city where I feel at home. In fact, I haven’t eaten one of those in years.
You haven’t been following the healthy trend of green juices…
ROBERT PATTINSON: No… (Sighs) I prefer burger juice!
British, you represent a French house and you live in the United States: do you see a difference in the way people live in these cities?
ROBERT PATTINSON: People think that everyone looks the same, it’s not true. Paris is not far from London, and yet look how different it is. Every city deserves to be discovered. You have to explore, leave the internationalized places, otherwise you end up eating the same club sandwich everywhere…
