RPAU ROUNDUP: First Reactions to Robert Pattinson in “The Drama” *Updated 20 March 2026*
Here are the first reactions post the LA premiere of The Drama. Once the film is released, I will put together a further separate roundup of reviews. This post will update as reviews become available.

Nora Dominick: got to see THE DRAMA, and no surprise, there is clearly a reason they are doing multiple projects together because Zendaya and Robert Pattinson are so great together. they’ve got chemistry in this romance movie that uses some dark (cringe-inducing) humor to its advantage
Guilherme “Ghost” Jacobs: The DRAMA made me deeply uncomfortable in my seat, and I loved every second of it. The kind of movie that causes a huge sense of secondhand embarrassment while always leaving you curious to see what comes next. A good movie for dates, gossip, and to go see without knowing anything about it.
Chloe Williams: the drama is totally unexpected — even if you think you know what you’re getting into. but what’s NOT a surprise? zendaya & robert pattinson are dynamic & i’m obsessed with them together. this is a thought-provoking, conversation-starter of a movie.
THE DRAMA is absolutely what you expect from Pattinson and Kristoffer Borgli, but completely unexpected for Zendaya. And that’s why it’s masterful. It subverts America’s sweetheart for achingly hilarious laughs that will leave your jaw on the floor and your sides splitting.

Matt Neglia (Next Best Picture): THE DRAMA is my kind of dark romantic comedy: deeply complex, incredibly stressful, provocative, and uncomfortably funny. It’s an examination not just of a relationship, but of our capacity for empathy toward people who may have done, or even contemplated, the worst imaginable things. Zendaya and Robert Pattinson play off each other so well, generating crackling chemistry while balancing cringe-inducing comedy with open-hearted sincerity in every facet of their emotionally demanding performances. Brilliantly edited, Kristoffer Borgli’s latest unfolds like a dreadful, violent car wreck that keeps piling up; you want to look away in disgust, yet it becomes increasingly impossible as the tragedy increases.
Marc Malkin: “The Drama” is a rom-com? Yes-ish. Is it a thriller? Sorta. It is a wild ride? Yes. Zendaya and Robert Pattinson chemistry is fire. So good. So fun. So dark. Alana Haim is perfectly unhinged.
Thomas Desroches: The Drama is one of the best films I’ve seen this year. Funny, provocative, and biting, with a real political message. Zendaya and Robert Pattinson make a great duo, but Pattinson steals the show. Spoiler alert: the less you know, the better.
Bill Bria: Kristoffer Borgli walks a gossamer-thin tonal line in #TheDrama, letting you sit in discomfiture for the duration. Yet it’s also hilarious; Pattinson is a hoot. Zendaya uses her natural ambiguity to her advantage. Borgli’s film is like if Albert Brooks & Ingmar Bergman teamed up.
Anthony: Throw out all expectations. #TheDrama is going to put you through EVERY emotion. Zendaya and Robert are so good on screen. The comedy is top tier and the climax of the film has to be one of the most stressful moments I’ve ever had in a theater, I love this movie. (5 stars)
Who Let Us Out: What a movie, unexpected, unrelatable and relatable at the same time. We loved it. #TheDrama will have you second guessing your own relationships and social circle. What a genius film.
Erik Davis (Fandango | Rotten Tomatoes): Kristoffer Borgli’s #TheDrama is a wildly unconventional rom-com that hit all the right spots for me. Deeply funny and definitely a little twisted, Zendaya and Robert Pattinson are great as an engaged couple whose lives spiral after a big secret drops. There’s a wild turn that sends the story in unexpected directions, but the real payoff is everything that follows. Sharp writing, slick editing and a story that’s ultimately about holding onto love when things get messy. Top-tier dark comedy imo.
Jairo Jiminez: THE DRAMA is a perfectly executed exercise in disturbing romantic discomfort from Borgli. Robert Pattinson & Zendaya are sublime, turning their chemistry into cutting glances & suffocating silences — you won’t be able to take your eyes off them. A provocatively intelligent film!

According to World of Reel, there was an ultra-private tight-lipped screening of The Drama on the East Coast on 11 June 2025. This is what Jordan has heard according to multiple sources that were in attendance:
“People are calling this a huge leap for Kristoffer Borgli, easily his boldest and most provocative work yet. There’s a pivotal moment in the film that transforms the story, which had the entire room shifting in their seats. It crosses a line most movies wouldn’t dare.
I was asked not to spoil specifics, and I get why. Part of the impact is not knowing what’s coming. But trust me: “The Drama” is going to light up festival chatting, and thinkpieces for months. It’s being described to me as a “very uncomfortable” watch, but with a major dose of sardonic humor.
What can be confirmed: “The Drama” centers on a couple, played by Pattinson and Zendaya, whose relationship takes an … unexpected turn right before their wedding day. Aided by Borgli’s “nasty” and “brilliant” screenplay is Pattinson who is said to deliver career-best work here. He pushes his acting skills to the edge as he portrays an ordinary British man caught up in an extraordinary situation.
While a release date has yet to be announced, I wouldn’t be surprised if the film gets positioned for a fall festival debut, with Venice, Telluride, and TIFF among the likely contenders.
For Borgli, a filmmaker filled with potential, and whose sophomore effort, 2022’s “Sick of Myself,” premiered at Cannes, “The Drama” marks his most high-profile film yet, with two of the most in-demand actors in Hollywood leading the cast. Keep a close eye on this one.”
