Collider talks Cinematography and The Batman with Greig Fraser
Adam Chitwood from Collider chatted with Australian cinematographer Greig Fraser currently working with Matt Reeves on The Batman. In the interview Greig mentions that what the actors have said previously about the movie being a character based movie is correct. That Matt’s script is very very good and well thought out and they’re having a ball filming it. The film won’t be oppressively dark visually and they are definitely trying to create intrigue. Matt’s an incredible director … I’m excited to be currently working with him on Batman…But I can tell you – what I will do – what some of the actors have gone away and said, it is a character based movie about the characters, about Andy Serkis’s character and Rob Pattinson’s character. It’s a very very good script, like all of Matt’s scripts it’s very good, it’s very well thought out and we’re having a ball making it. We’re doing our best. It’s a lot of pressure. I don’t think Matt takes non-pressure movies. … Batman is a lot of pressure. He’s gutsy, he’s a gutsy director.
It’s a good question [on how dark Batman will be] and it’s a question we ask ourselves. I can’t talk specifically of course. There’s darkness in the character for sure and we need to create a mood, which is obvious, it’s a Batman film. I don’t think it’s going to be oppressively dark in terms of visually, because that’s not what we’re trying to – we’re not trying to have a competition about who can go the darkest of the darkest of the darkest. We’re trying to create intrigue. I love the way some of the comics look and the graphic novels. You can see relatively quite clearly in those graphic novels. I can’t be too specific. I’m having a ball lighting it. It’s hard work but so rewarding.
