Indiewire: Let’s Ask Again: Can Robert Pattinson Act?

Well according to Caryn James the answer is no or sort of.  Oh well – like I’ve said before, it’s subjective and everyone is entitled to their opinions, everyone loved Titanic the movie – I would rather stick pins in my eyes than have to ever sit through that again.  The Academy also gave Nicole Kidman an Oscar for The Hours when I thought Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore acted circles around her.  And don’t even get me started about Gwenyth Paltrow who I have not watched in a film since Sliding Doors (and contrary to popular opinion her English accent made my ears bleed).  So all that I’m saying is – I’m posting this so that noone can say we are biased and only post positive opinions about Rob.  The one thing though is that my understanding of what came out of Cannes was a pretty even 50/50 split of what they thought about Cosmopolis.  Interesting twist on things …

“Robert Pattinson has made some daring artistic choices apart from his most famous, pasty-faced role; too bad so many of those fillms have been clunkers.

He played the young Salvador Dali in Little Ashes, a pre-Twilight film so badly written it left open the question of whether Pattinson could really act. He played the doomed young lover in the icky, maudlin Remember Me (2010), which grafts a contemporary Romeo and Juliet plot onto a 9-11 drama [Maria:  I must have read a different Romeo & Juliette]; not his most inspired choice, but at least he was reaching for something serious again. And if Reese Witherspoon and circus animals couldn’t save the snoozefest that was Water for Elephants, you can’t hold Pattinson responsible for that one either.

So we’re still wondering if he can act in strong sunlight and  — uh-oh —  along comes Bel Ami, a predictably pretty, unexpectedly moribund drama.

And I hate to say this, but Pattison is just as robotic and vapid as the direction. Georges’ humiliating rejection of Virginie almost makes him a real character – mean-spirited, cruel and petty, but with a believable spark. But that comes far too late to save the film.

Pattinson’s fault? Not entirely, of course. But the answer to the “Can he really act?” question is not looking hopeful for him. Word out of Cannes about his next film, David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis, isn’t encouraging. Good thing he’ll always have fangs to fall back on.”

I love articles that are written purely to get hits on a site … no really I am.  It’s just like posting sensationalist titles and waffle on fansites that draw people in and then don’t’ actually deliver what they are enticing you to read.  See what I did there huh.

So let me get this right:

1.  The script was bad in Little Ashes.

2.  Rob can’t be held responsible for how boring WFE was.

3.  And George’s rejection of Virginie was good but it was too little too late and primarily the film suffers from bad direction.

4.  Word out of Cannes isn’t encouraging?

So how are the 4 points above evidence of Rob not being able to act?   See what I mean – the byline leads you to believe we will get an answer from the article, but we are still left pondering.   Oh well – Hollywood is full of successful actors that can’t act – if Rob happens to join them – lucky for us.  Caryn is after all entitled to her own opinion.

What a bizarre article. Like you say Maria, she asks the question in the byline yet by the time she’s finished, she still hasn’t provided her answer, she doesn’t even seem to try. The evidence she uses to try & back up her statement is poor. Really does seem to be all the majority of people are after these days, hits on their sites. They don’t care about the quality of their content.

Such a funny statement, comparing Remember Me to Romeo & Juliet? I too must have read a different version Maria. Where are the similarities? And how is Little Ashes poorly written? I could go on but I won’t – you’re entitled to your opinion Caryn, I just don’t agree with it. Your loss. Such a shame you fail to appreciate the brilliant talent that Rob possesses & cannot appreciate quality film. You’re missing out on a lot there Caryn – a hell of a lot.

NO NO NO NO NO!!! Right now i want to stick pins in YOUR eyes, Caryn James! And Maria, for the record, feel free to be biased, if it means I can avoid reading crap like this in the future! I should have known better than to proceed, as soon as I read the title of this post.
Totally agree, @ Michelle – she doesn’t know what she’s missing. Her loss.
Now I need some serious Rob time to make me smile again. (This phone just doesn’t cut it, when there is so much beauty to admire…..)

Well, there is no accounting for human nature and the diverse range of opinions. What I find irritating with some critics critiques is that they do not critique the film itself and it is blatantly obvious that they are offering a personal opinion and I for one don’t want to read that. I just love watching Rob act – that is what he does – and that’s my personal opinion. God, I’ll have to stop blathering!! Sock it to them Rob!! And, Georges/Rob, you are amazing – loved Bel Ami. Thanks for post Maria.

Oh how I dislike reviews such as this where they say nothing of substance. If these other (external) factors were to blame for a “bad” movie why is it told in relation to Rob’s acting ability????? And if he was able to show “believable spark” as an angry Georges doesn’t that mean that he can act?? Or was that a fluke???? I don’t even know
Plus, it seems to me that so far the reviews from Cannes are 50/50. Some of the critics are giving him very high praise for his performance in Cosmopolis and in my book that means that he can definitely act. Every movie and every actor will get both negative and positive reviews so that’s normal – but Rob has great acting ability and though he is not the world’s best actor just yet he will definitely be there one day because of his instinct and his ability to “get under the skin” of his character. There! I’ve said it and I feel better now!!!!

LOL @Ephie – yeah I felt better after dissecting it too.

I’m still working on Onswipe – it’s not being compliant at all.
