David Stratton’s WFE Review

We all saw David Stratton & Margaret Pomeranz’s review of WFE on ‘At The Movies’ on Wednesday night & now we have David’s written review in The Australian. 4 stars is brilliant coming from him, as we know he is a very harsh critic.  Here’s an extract:

Pattinson and Witherspoon bring plenty of charisma to their characters (Michelle: is that the sound of humble pie being eaten? Rob brings WAY more than ‘charisma’ to his character but coming from YOU David, that is high praise!) , but it’s Waltz and Rosie who steal the film. The actor, first seen on cinema screens in Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, is a master at combining charm with evil at the same time, and he is the linchpin that holds this circus saga together.

Unexpectedly good, too, is the direction by Francis Lawrence, whose previous two features (Constantine and I am Legend) have both been science fiction. In many ways, though Water for Elephants basically constitutes some pretty far-fetched melodrama,  it succeeds in becoming the most enjoyable circus movie since Cecil B. DeMille’s The Greatest Show on Earth.

I have to say David, before I heard your review on Wednesday night, I was thinking maybe you would slam WFE based on your past unfair reviews & was ready to badmouth you. Even though I don’t agree with everything you say, am happy to see you at least gave this beautiful film the credit it deserves, unlike certain other people. To read the entire review in full, just click on the highlighted link above.  I cannot say enough how brilliant Rob is in the film. His performance as Jacob is just absolutely superb.  Cannot put into words how wonderful he is, you all know exactly what I mean.  The cinema will be my second home for many weekends to come *grins*

Great review by David Stratton, exactly what this brilliant movie deserves.

I went and looked at the website and I have to ask, was Dicky watching the same movie as the rest of us? No chemistry, WTF? Oh and I have read the book and I loved the movie Dicky!!! He does say some positive things I suppose but no chemistry *shakes head*.

Wow that’s really surprising that he said that Cindy. Where’s the praise that Rob deserves Dicky?? He never said anything good about him at all – grrrrrrrrrr!!!! Only 3 stars – so so disappointing to hear that from him. He is one person who I thought would automatically give Rob the praise he so deserves. He did say some positive things about the film as you say Vicky but 3 stars – I expected more from him I have to say.

I was thrilled to read David’s review was such a surprise too as he is a tough customer! Might just pop a humble pie in the oven for him I think he deserves one.

As for you Dicky I am thinking you didn’t get any quality time with Rob when he was in Sydney and you are feeling a little bit miffed or something. Dicky loves Rob or maybe he just outed himself and it is just Edward he loves afterall. Hmmmmmm

I have to disagree with David. (I won’t even mention the other ‘critic’-waste of time he is.) I am a big fan of Christolph, and he is indeed excellent in the movie but the one that steals the show is Rob. And I mean it! And it is not because he is drop-dead gorgeous, being Rob (with a tan, shaved and short hair- it suits me just as well as pale, unshaved and longer locks. What about you ladies?) where was I? Ah, yes, stealing the show. Rob is brilliant as Jacob. Dedicated fan or not, you cannot not see that. It’s a little convenient to give the guy who already has an oscar under his belt the thumbs up, isn’t it? Especially if he is in the role of the bad guy. I’ve got the feeling that more than often, being able to be a ‘good’ bad guy onscreen, gives you more credit than being able to translate more “delicate” feelings…
I’ve also read a few times about Jacob and Rosie’s connection being more evident than with Marlena.
Well,Jacob is a vet, and loves animal . . . However, Jacob is a virgin and in love with his boss’ wife. I don’t think he can show or even understand his own feelings the same way.

    Have a lovely Sunday.

I was also surprised to see & read David’s review, I thought he’d can it. But I must say Maragaret’s was the most surprising reaction. Not complaining mind you.

Have seen it 3 times now..has anybody else noticed some dialogue & senes seen in trailers/previews are not in the movie?

I was really surprised by Margaret’s reaction too Dell. She is normally SO hard & unfair. She absolutely loved it, she was gushing! I’m not a fan of these two people I have to say, not at all, but at least they did praise the film as anyone with a brain would!

Yep I’ve noticed that too with the dialogue/scenes, some are missing. The way they were cut in the trailers/previews also makes it seem different. The dialogue was shown over different scenes in parts of the previews & as with all movies, all the scenes don’t make the final cut. I really hope there are deleted/extended scenes on the DVD *smiles sweetly* Yep I’m already thinking about the DVD & all the copies I’ll be buying hehe.

I’m with you Michelle, given how wonderful this movie is how could we not be thinking about the DVD already. I see myself with many copies LOL!!

I’m with you Mim. This is a beautifully crafted film and all of characters were believable, enabling us to be drawn into the story. Rob is the stand out because he is the new ‘kid’ on the block and he met this challenge superbly, to equal his Oscar winning co-stars. This film more than deserves its 4 star rating. Bravo to all the players. May there by many more from this very gifted human being, Robert Pattinson.

Hahaha OMG someone saw it @Bee. I only just watched the interview last Friday – thankfully they provided me with a copy and NO I’m not posting it on the site LOL. At least I knew my subject well 🙂 Thanks to Rob being late – he was supposed to arrive in the background during my interview – oh well there’s always next time 🙂 I doubt I would have been able to focus – which is what I said to them when they told me what they wanted to happen. No seriously – answer questions whilst Rob’s a few feet away – I don’t think so LOL.
