Initial Media Reaction to The Rover Trailer *Updated Again*

Oh I need to get to sleep but it’s overrated right … I’ll update this as they come in (or when I’m awake) Update:  new reactions added below before cut:

Screen Invasion:  “This highly anticipated film will make its big screen appearance in June and from the looks of it, audience members will not be disappointed in the least. …

Veteran actor Guy Pearce plays the role of Eric, the hardened loner, seemingly to the tee. He does a great job of successfully making you believe that this is what people in a world without things such as social media and online marketing would be like. The raw emotion and talent is very prevalent, taking this lead role to new heights, especially since the character was written with Pearce in mind.

Alongside Pearce is the young yet promising Robert Pattinson, lending his abilities to the role of Rey, the brother of one of the gang members who gets left behind when they steal Eric’s car. Even though Pattinson has been judged harshly for his past participation in a certain young adult vampire series, he truly is a talented individual who is more than ready to show what he can do. Both Pattinson and Pearce seem to work well with each other, making the story even more three dimensional and believable. …

This film has been garnered a following for some time now and this trailer easily convinces you that The Rover is a must see. The superb talent of both Pearce and Pattinson will surely be well received and will take the already strongly written script to levels beyond our imagination.” [Maria:  Scott Huntington seems to see what we see – bloody brilliant]

TheLondonFilmReview: “2014 is certainly starting to look like a good year for Robert Pattinson … The Rover is another movie on my “must see” list this year, making it two with Robert Pattinson in lead roles.  Could 2014 be the year that finally sees Robert Pattinson turn his detractors round, and finds his obscure, almost non-existent fanbase (kidding!) vindicated.  It really really wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest”.

IndieWire:  “Michod comes to Cannes’ slim midnight section this year with “The Rover,” a wild-looking neo-western co-written by fellow Aussie filmmaker Joel Edgerton and starring Guy Pearce—alongside Robert Pattison, who might just become something of a Cannes regular if he keeps this up.”

GiantFreakinRobot: “The tone and feel of this trailer is pitch perfect for this style and this subject matter. Everything is grim, dirty, dusty, and bleak beyond imagination. I love the overall aesthetic of The Rover, which is austere and forbidding; quiet, but punctuated with sharp explosions of extreme brutality. This has the countenance of a gritty western, and is certainly not going to be for the faint of heart. That shot of Pearce just sitting there, totally calm, as the car goes skidding past the window upside down is nothing short of fantastic.  … Pearce is suitably grizzled and roughed up to sell his character, you definitely fear the guy and he has nothing left to lose. We’ll have to wait and see how Pattinson handles that southern drawl—there’s not enough here to really see if he pulls it off for the long haul or not. He shows some promise, and you can tell he’s trying desperately to shake off what’s left of those vampire sparkles. Throw in Scoot McNairy (Monsters, 12 Years A Slave), and you’ve got the makings of one hell of a cast.”

The Movie Fanatic:  “That first The Rover trailer was something else. It teased the rift between stars Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson. If that one got you, wait until you witness the explosive power of the latest trailer from The Rover!”

HitFix:  “We’ve now had glimpses of both Cannes entries starring Robert Pattinson — the other being David Cronenberg’s Competition entry “Maps to the Stars” — and this looks the grabbier one. That said, this looks like a most impressive showcase for Guy Pearce, playing a man hunting down the gang who stole his car in the Australian Outback. Michôd doesn’t appear to have lost the brutal command of atmosphere, balancing latent and not-so-latent violence,  that he wielded in his debut — count me very excited for this indeed.”

ScreenRant: “f the trailer suggests anything, it’s that the unlikely pair wind up bonding along the way, but more than anything, The Rover‘s teaser hints at unflinching violence. Frankly, the movie looks downright apocalyptic, though it’s not clear whether the narrative unfolds on a future Earth in the wake of some world-changing catastrophe, or if Michôd’s setting is just barren by nature.  … The rest of us, meanwhile, have to wait for June to see it ourselves, but it looks like it’ll be worth the wait.”

GeekTyrant:  “This looks like it’s going to be a great film. I’m definitely putting it on my must watch list.”

BleedingCool: “… it could cement Michôd as a real talent to keep a very close focus on. … Robert Pattinson’s shrugged off the Twilight stigma pretty nicely, I think. Hopefully he’ll turn in a good performance here, and I expect we can trust Pearce to pitch his normal game.”

The Film Stage:  “Considering this one is part of the Midnight Screenings section at Cannes, we imagine things will be getting fairly dark and that sort of dread is on full display here.”

Twitch:  “And zowie! Does this trailer impress. Such intensity and style. We would expect nothing less from the director of the acclaimed Animal Kingdom.”

The Playlist: “Fear The Man With Nothing Left To Lose. So goes the tagline of David Michod‘s “The Rover” starring Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson, and with the film now headed to Cannes … And yes, it looks pretty damn good.”

FirstShowing.net: “Fear the man with nothing left to lose. Wow – this is indeed a must watch. … We featured the first riveting teaser in late January, but this time they show even more of the story without giving away anything, and damn, it looks incredible. From the emotion in Pearce’s eyes, to thebleakness of the world, this is one of my most anticipated to see this summer. Stop & watch now.”

Cinemablend:  “The shot of Pearce failing to look up as a car crashes outside his window gives me shivers, for some reason. There’s something so disconnected about it. Anyway, A24 shared a new photo from the film, and things don’t look good for Pattinson.  … The tagline for The Rover is, “Fear the man with nothing left to lose.” Chilling.”

Movie.com:  “Now Michôd is back with another film, The Rover, and it looks like it may be one of the most gripping films of the year. … The Rover looks like a beautifully photographed, intense tale of one man who decides to say screw it all and chase down the men who took the one thing he had left. And if you’re the type who instantly dismisses Pattinson because of his Twilight days, this is further evidence as to why he shouldn’t simply be ignored.”  [My emphasis]

Screencrush: “Also, it’s another impressive right turn from Pattinson, who continues to show he can do solid work that doesn’t involve playing an angsty vampire.”

The last few hours have been amazing.  I’m so happy for David Michôd and Rob.  Amazing day.
