Cosmopolis on The Playlist’s 15 Most Anticipated of Cannes
The Playlist seems to be giving Rob a chance with comments like “we’re impressed with what we’ve seen of him here, and if he ever wins over his doubters, it’ll be on this one.” They have included Cosmopolis in the 15 films they are most anticipating in Cannes and I have to admit I’m a little nervous for Rob.
“Cosmopolis” – dir. David Cronenberg – France/Germany/Canada
Synopsis: Based on the novel by American author Don DeLillo, this centers on Eric Packer (Robert Pattinson), a young multi-billionaire making an epic, ultimately doomed limo ride across New York City.
What You Need to Know: At the outset, “Cosmopolis” seems to fall in line with the mannered, critic-friendly films of the recent Cronenberg era. It is, after all, an adaptation of a critically revered and best-selling novel and stars hunky heartthrob-of-the-moment Robert Pattinson. But having seen those first few trailers, the movie seems more atypical and dangerous (a good thing, since “A Dangerous Method” felt far too safe for a filmmaker known for exploding heads and genital mutilation), and certainly a return to a more recognizable kind of picture for the director with a number of Cronenberg’s favorite thematic tics look to be explored, including man’s relationship with modern technology, the messiness of murder, and sexual obsession. The big question is whether “Twilight” star Pattinson can pull off that lead role. His starring efforts outside the vampire franchise, like “Water For Elephants” and “Bel Ami,” have mostly been met by shrugs, but we’re impressed with what we’ve seen of him here, and if he ever wins over his doubters, it’ll be on this one. He’s got a strong supporting cast behind him which’ll help, with Juliette Binoche, Paul Giamatti, Samantha Morton, Jay Baruchel, Sarah Gadon and Mathieu Amalric along for the ride.”
If only it was so easy to win over the doubters – there will always be people who don’t like his style, and claim he can’t act, but like I said to Ephie this afternoon – everyone sees different things in people. I don’t care if people dislike Rob’s acting, as long as it brings me happiness – I can live with that.

That’s the thing about opinions, everybody has one and everyone is different. I think an actor needs to be believable in the role and for me Rob nails that every time!!!! Cosmopolis is my most anticipated at Cannes, just sayin. Thanks Maria.

Fully and totally agree @maria. It is good though to see such comments – at least they are not condemning him from the start. There is definitely a shift.

“…as long as it brings me happiness” Totally agree @Maria ~ and Rob has brought me so much happiness, in a totally unexpected way. I love that just the mention of his name brings a smile to my face. Throw in his voice, his talent, his personality (at least what he lets us see), his diverse roles and the way his fascinating mind works …… to be lucky enough to appreciate all that makes me feel extremely fortunate.

Here here Maria – I am more than happy to continue to watch Rob in his many ventures, there will always be haters but totally their loss and not his
Carmel
The haters will never go away completely, no matter how the movie is perceived, however Cosmopolis seems to given Rob a confidence in his own talent so I think it is already a winner.

Lovely words @Carmel. @Maria, my opinion is that when someone is popular (ie gajillions of people admire them in some capacity), then regardless of whether others acknowledge that someone’s ability, that someone must have the “it” factor working for them (eg your earlier points about some Oscar-winning actresses). That certain someone wouldn’t be signed on by people like Cronenberg if there wasn’t more going for them than the Twi-machine. Regardless of all this, I really don’t care who says what – Rob has far more than just the “it” going for him in my mind, and for me that is enough that I no longer feel the need to justify my appreciation of him to anyone (I might have been known to angrily slam the haters in my immediate circle – now I just pity them for their loss). All the same it is very nice to see critics acknowledge they are intending to watch his latest film 😀 Maria, thank you for continuing to bring us every bit of relevant Rob news there is. Bliss moments of the day to read!
