@larry411: Is Bel Ami eligible for Berlin Film Festival?

This is an interesting analysis by @larry411 and gives good insight into how films might be selected for inclusion.  I agree with Larry – Protagonist said in 2011 that the film would be screened at a film festival – given the March release date – that pretty much only leaves Berlin.  I guess we should definitely know by the end of this week whether Bel Ami will definitely be included … or maybe they will make us wait even longer.  One thing for sure … Georges is on his way and he ain’t going to disappoint.

According to Larry:

“Few upcoming films have garnered as much attention from my readers and Twitter followers as Declan Donnellan’s Bel Ami. Based on the novel by Guy de Maupassant, the movie stars Robert Pattinson (you’ve heard of him) as George Duroy, an ambitious young man in Paris circa 1890s. The film is said to be fast-paced, provocative, and sexy.

In addition to Pattinson, the film boasts an all-star cast featuring Christina Ricci, Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Colm Meaney, Bel Ami is a co-production of UK firms Redwave Films, XIX Entertainment, and Protagonist Pictures, along with Italy’s giant Rai Films. It opens in some European territories, including the UK, on March 2 with a worldwide rollout in the weeks to follow.

Non-Competition sections of the festival are more liberal in their rules. They do allow theatrical release outside country of origin but only outside Europe. So a European film could play in America, for example. and still be eligible. But Belgium is indeed in Europe. So I don’t see any way a film is allowed if it is a European film and it has been exhibited in Europe outside its own country. But that only applies to “public screenings.” It’s possible these screenings were not considered “public.” Since the screenings were not presented in their country of origin, and were not presented outside Europe, the film would not be eligible unless they were not considered to be public screenings.

This is my feeling on it. I think it got into Berlin (just a feeling). And I think they were able to do this because the screenings were not considered “public” since only certain people were allowed. They may have asked the festival for permission or a waiver, and the festival may have told them it was okay since they were not really “public” screenings but “private” screenings for a specific audience. …”

@robroy – the release date for Australia has not yet been confirmed and I have that straight from the distributor. They did say it would be in the first quarter, but a definite date is yet to be locked in, although Palace have been advertising since October 2011 that it will be released 1 March 2012. Hopscotch confirmed to me that Palace are just guessing at that.

Once release date has been confirmed we will let everyone know. It shouldn’t be too long now.
