Weekend Results are in for WFE

Box Office Mojo reports:
“Water for Elephants corralled an estimated $17.5 million at 2,817 locations, which was within the mid-pack range of comparable titles. It was a far cry from Dear John and was even behind The Time Traveler’s Wife, but it more than doubled the first weekend gross of the last non-Twilight Robert Pattinson vehicle Remember Me. Adjusted for ticket-price inflation, Water for Elephants’ start was on par with A Walk in the Clouds and The Notebook, albeit with more locations. The movie was marketed as a lush romantic drama, bolstered by its best-selling novel basis and its striking circus backdrop. Pattinson batted in his lovelorn wheelhouse, but Reese Witherspoon had top billing and the movie’s audience seemed to skew older. Distributor 20th Century Fox’s research showed that 70 percent of the audience was female and 70 percent was 25 years of age and older.”
I’m sorry but if WFE doesn’t do better than Dear John then there is seriously something wrong with the movie-going public because although I refuse to watch a movie with Sapfried, I have not met anyone who has seen it and told me they enjoyed it or thought it was any good. Â And yes yes, Box Office Mojo – Remember Me only grossed about $19 million+ in the US in total – so opening weekend has almost doubled the entire takings of that indie film domestically.
For those who are interested in the comparable figures mentioned in opening weekends above (because let’s face it – we know how thorough I like to be and I don’t like sweeping statements without evidence), here they are and I’ve included the final domestic totals for the US:
Dear John grossed $30,468,614, but it opened in February 2010 and not over Easter and was in 2,969 theatres (total US gross $80,014,842)
Time Traveller’s Wife grossed $18,623,171, again it opened in August 2009 and was in 2,988 theatres (total US gross $63,414,846)
The Notebook grossed $13,464,745, opening in June 2004 in 2,303 theatres (total US gross was $81,001,787)
A Walk in the Clouds  grossed $9,526,010 opening in August 1995 in 1,534 theatres (total US gross was $50,008,143)
BOM has also released it’s foreign estimates with $2.6 million – so all in all so far WFE has grossed $20.1 million. Â I cannot wait to see what happens when it’s finally released after the premieres in the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Australia *claps hands*. Â Rob and co you should be pretty chuffed with these results.

Good numbers. I didn`t expect much box office in US, so for me the numbers are pretty good.
I saw Dear John and The time traveler´s wife and I didn`t like none of these films, even loving Amanda Seyfried and specially Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams ( by the way, I would love to see Rob and Rachel working together ). The Notebook and A walk in the clouds are good.

*claps hands* these numbers are brilliant. I LOVE seeing the film doing so well – exactly how it deserves to do. I too cannot wait to see the numbers climb even more squeeeee.
Thanks so much for the update Maria & for always being so thorough & informative 😀
Oh & I agree completely with your Dear John comment. I have seen this film, but not by choice. I was dragged along by a friend who promised to see RM in return with me but never did (yep am still p’ed off about that) Dear John is a very average film – nothing special & definitely nothing to boast about, the complete opposite. I didn’t enjoy it at all. As you say Maria, if people prefer THAT to the beautiful film that is WFE, there is something seriously seriously wrong with them.

This is awesome news. So good to see these numbers and I have to say nothing less than this movie and all involved with it deserve. I cannot wait for our chance!!!
I only recently saw Dear John having read the book (which I enjoyed), 2 hours of my life i’ll never get back and I was beyond disappointed. If WFE doesn’t outdo that then it really is a sad reflection of peoples tastes today.

I hope that second sentence makes sense. On rereading I was concerned. This movie and all connected to it, deserve all the good coming their way and that was the point I was trying to make. Sorry to repeat but i had to clarify for my own peace of mind.
Maria
No worries @Vicky – I understood what you mean, but happy for you to clarify.
BTW you might want to go check out what I’ve just posted 🙂

I have never followed the movie number games until Rob, but I think I do know some things
1/ Rob, or any good actor, doesn’t pick roles based on projected gross
2/ Good numbers are what gives an actor the opportunity to pick the roles they want.
It’s a tricky business but W4E seems to have walked that line very well. Good numbers and a chance for all concerned to be creative as well as enjoy the process. Sounds like a winner to me.
