Total Film: Bel-Ami in Marketing Hell

Hey Protagonist I think you need to poll Rob’s real fans and not the ones who think he’s Edward because in all seriousness I WANT to see him be a shit.

According to TotalFilm:

“Robert Pattinson admits that Bel Ami is still in editing because studio honchos are worried about alienating audiences used to his goody-two-shoes persona in the Twilight franchise.

RPattz plays the titular Bel Ami in an adaptation of Maupassant’s classic novel about a 19th century womanising, social-climbing journalist who sleeps his way round Paris.

Filming in the UK and Budapest opposite leading ladies Uma Thurman, Christina Ricci and Kristen Scott Thomas wrapped in spring 2010 and was originally slated for a Christmas release. It currently has no confirmed opening date.

“We were really true to the book and because the guy is basically a shit who wins everything at the end it’s really difficult to market it  – especially with me in it,” Pattinson tells TF exclusively.

“Everyone’s worried that everyone’s going to be thinking, ‘Oh I want him to be nice, he’s got to be nice to all the ladies’.”

Bel Ami, though, is an unrepentant cad.  “I know,” laughs the Water For Elephants star, “But that was fun!”

For more on Robert Pattinson and Water For Elephants check out the latest issue of Total Film, out 14 April”.

Wow “goody two shoes” Edward? Am I the only one who thinks Edward is controlling and manipulative?

I totally second that! I want to see him in this role as it is so different, and am looking forward to him playing a “bad guy”.

No Maria, you are not the only one and I have to say, I have issues with the Edward/Bella relationship (obsessive much) as well, but hey that’s just me.

I cannot wait to see Rob as Georges. I don’t want him to have redeeming qualities, he surely didn’t in the book!!! I wish they woud stop thinking that all of Rob’s fans want him to be Edward in everything. That coudn’t be further from the truth *stepsoffsoapbox*.

I know @Vicky thankfully we have Cronenberg who does give a rats arse about Edward!

Whats really stupid about the whole thing is that the fans (stalkers) that only want him to be Edward will go anyway – so whether or not they like him in this role doesn’t really matter – the producers already have their money.
The rest of us (with half a brain or more) are keen to see him stretch his acting wings and to be perfectly honest, cads can be quite charming sometimes too.
I love the idea of the role, but I am concrened that they going to chop it up so much that the movie will be ruined and he will get the balme.
Who’s the moron that cast him as a cad and then decided it was a bad marketting move anyway?!

This whole thing really p1sses me off.

Really, I love twilight and I think the books and moview were good fun, but I tell you BD can’tcome soon enough – won’t it be great to have alll that nonsense behind us.
    Poor Rob.

What`s going on with these people? Edward is a vampire, he is not human, he is not a hero, for me it is only Rob playing a character that is a vampire, I love the way he did it but it is only this.
By the other hand, Georges is a human being, he is not a bidimensional man, he has flaws of character, he is an anti-hero, he is a seducer, a beautiful and smart man who uses people at the same way that people use him too.
The book was brilliantly written by Guy de Maupassant. It is an ironic critic to the parisian society of the 19th century but it is still very current.
I am anxious to see Robert/Duroy, please!!

Lol that’s ok Liz – I guess it really means that Rob has them nervous because he is so convincing in the role – yeah that’s how I’m going to look at it

The ruthless manwhoring bastard better not get a makeover – at least they aren’t asking him to do reshoots!

I think Jacob is way more manipulative than Edward.

    Ooh! GREAT POINT @Sare!
Won’t it be interesting if it is released promptly after BD finishes in cinemas…. (hopefully in all it’s manwhoring glory)

These twits obviously havent seen The Haunted Airman because correct me if I am wrong but technically he was a murderer in that {at the end} so how much worse is a “ruthless manwhoring bastard??

He was @Cindy but if you have read the book the Haunting of Toby Jugg – it’s actually about demonic possession, I don’t think that was really made clear in the BBC version, and not about his character as it is in Bel-Ami.

Who’s pulling the strings? I’m not sure I see what you mean – I can’t see how Summit can have any hold over Protagonist?

I actually think these articles are just out there to gauge audience reaction. I highly doubt they care whether they entice the Twihards or not – let’s face it – they are probably trying to work the movie from being R rated to being MA or MA+ to attract a wider audience. After all – it’s all about bums on seats.

After all don’t forget according to the Oz distributor – we are seeing this film in the second half of this year. Maybe they are just hyping it because Cannes is less than 2 months away! No such thing as bad publicity.

Thanks for that Maria. And no I havent read the book but I must do that, because as you said it didnt come across in the bbc movie. To me it was more like Toby was suffering post traumatic stress disorder.

@Maria you are definitely not the only one that thinks that way. That really sucks. He’s not Duroy, he’s an actor playing a man whore, that doesn’t make him one. That’s what actors do, that’s there job. Wow some people are really stupid. *so upset*

@Maria I didn’t know that in the book Toby was possessed. Never read the book. But thanks for letting us know let us know. I must read the book now.

LOL!! I really just think the people in the editing room don’t want to share the goods.

LOL @ Vertigo! Good point! 🙂

When I read this I was so p*ssed. I just feel so bad for Rob – how freaking frustrating for him and his *real* fans. o.O I’d like to give these studio people a piece of my mind. RELEASE BIG BAD GEORGES NOW!!!!

Seriously, I am so thrilled he’s doing Cosmopolis next….even more so after reading this. I totally agree Cronenberg will not pander to anyone and give us the movie HE wants to make.

Take notes Protagonist, you muppets. o.O

Agree Maria think they are trying to sort out the rating and how to keep it lower. Traditionally “R” movies don’t do as well in the box office and they will be trying to see how they can get as many bums on seats. Frankly the bigger the bastard the more appealing this movie will be to me. I can’t really see how they could edit any other way without reshoots and a complete change to the story. DuRoy is a bastard, end of story and I can’t wait to meet him!
