I know it doesn’t really tell us anything we didn’t already know, but I’ve been waiting to see this confirmed at Variety:

“Robert Pattinson has signed on to “Cosmopolis,” which David Cronenberg penned and will direct.

Based on the Don DeLillo tome of the same name, story follows a multimillionaire played by Pattinson who risks his entire fortune to bet against the yen on a cataclysmic day.

Cronenberg will also produce along with Paulo Branco. Renee Tab will exec produce.

Pattinson is slowly trying to break away from his “Twilight” fan base and aiming for more adult-driven projects like this and the Francis Lawrence-directed “Water for Elephants,” which also stars Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz.

Cronenberg just finished filming “A Dangerous Method” with Viggo Mortensen and Michael Fassbender and had a slew of projects on his plate to pursue next, including an “Eastern Promises” sequel he has been trying to get off the ground for some time now.

With Pattinson attached, “Cosmopolis” will more than likely be the next film Cronenberg shoots even though a start date has not been set yet.”

Oh and “Pattinson is slowly trying to break away from his “Twilight” fan base” – personally I think the People’s Choice Awards confirmed that he’s succeeding in this.  That’s my opinion and not sour grapes –  I want Rob to continue with the film choices he’s making – who cares about fan based awards.  I’ve always said that Rob is this generation’s Johnny Depp – at 24 Depp was cast in 21 Jump Street and not receiving the film choices Rob’s been able to choose.  Just remember Depp was 27 before he had his first major movie role in Edward Scissorhand.   I’m not going to compare him to Leo because we all know Leo was a child star so it’s hardly the same.

And I’m prepared for some backlash from the people who hate comparisons, but remember this is my opinion and not gospel.  When I look at the careers of  both  Depp and DiCaprio, it’s hard for me not to notice that they, like Rob, picked diverse roles early on and even though they could have travelled the “teen” stars trail, they were clearly serious enough about their craft to not do so.  Remember all of them have at some stage been tagged with “teen idol”.   Hmm I think I may have even been a teen for one of them lol.

Happy days!

Cosmopolis has been moved on Rob’s IMDbPro page to Films in Production *woot woot*.  You know I’m going to give you any tidbit about this movie.  Anything

Yeah baby … according to my IMDbPro account … this

Okay it’s also stating filming dates – March 2011 to May 2011.  Not going to mention filming locations not interested in assisting the stalkers.

I never thought I’d post Colin on here but yes I’m happy to say thanks to MTV here’s his well wishes for Rob and Cosmopolis.  Do we really need any further confirmation that this is a done deal?

If you want to read the article, click on the link above.   Oh lordy lordy … I think I stopped breathing when he said “it’s a wonderful script”.  We knew that – otherwise Rob wouldn’t be saying “yes”.

Hmm Rob I know how could I go past this article by Jonathan Sullivan of The Film Stage when he introduces it with:

“I’m going to just get this right out in the open: I don’t hate Robert Pattinson. Sure, the Twilight franchise is wretched, but that’s more the material than the person and his other roles (Remember Me, the upcoming Water for Elephants) prove that he isn’t just a pretty boy who is going to ride the coattails of a beloved franchise; this man wants to actually try.”

See seriously how could I not continue to read or post.  Jonathan then goes on to say:

“Cosmopolis takes over the course of one day in the year 2000 and follows young Eric Packer, a financial wizard who is taking his fancy limousine out to go get a haircut and is prepping to risk his entire fortune on betting against the rise of the Japanese yen. He keeps getting sidetracked though, as he runs into a protest, a presidential visit, and a rapper’s funeral which keeps traffic at a stand still. During this time, he indulges in sadistic and voyeuristic thoughts and waxes philosophic about the state of the country from the back of his limo. In layman’s terms, the guy’s kind of a douchebag. Pattinson will be playing this character …

See that sounds great…for a novel. As for a movie, I don’t know if it will translate as well since what I’ve read up on it makes it sound like the main character just sits in his limo and does a bunch of monologues about assorted things. But then again, Cronenberg isn’t a horrible director and I’ve got faith in his vision; not only is he directing the movie, he’s also written the script for it so he’s got to have something invested in the material. What I also like is that Pattinson didn’t take this movie for the money or the glory; instead, he signed on because he admires not only the work of the director, but Don DeLillo‘s novels as well. It’s reasons like those that keep me rooting for the pretty boy vampire; I just hope Cosmopolis gives him the chance to shine.”

Oh Jonathan you are a prince!

And to give you some background that I haven’t mentioned in previous Cosmopolis posts.  David Cronenberg has been trying to make this movie since 2009, so it’s not something new.  Colin Farrell signed on in May 2010 and so although I thought it was insane that they were remaking  Total Recall, I am now very happy that that is going ahead lol.   Although it’s going to be pretty hard to not think of Arnie if I ever see that remake.  I found this info whilst snooping around IMDbPro yesterday, but got a little sidetracked.

Oh I thought we could do with some more info on Rob’s supposed new role as Eric Packer in Cosmopolis. HollywoodLife has apparently read the script and this is what they had to say (better hold onto your hats ladies):

PLOT: R-Patz plays a 28-year-old multi-billionaire finance guru who drives around Manhattan in a high-tech, pimped out limo in order to get a haircut, with many interruptions along the way. The entire movie is set within a 24 hour period and most of it takes place in his limosine. Eric Packer loses a lot of money for his clients by telling them to bet against the yen, and he is then stalked by two men who are out to get him. Eric curses, cheats on his wife, and seems to have an obsesssion with sex.

JUICY PARTS:

Eric has a strained relationship with his wife, 22-year-old Elise Shifrin. He doesn’t seem to know her very well and often asks her “When are we going to have sex again?”

    • Elise didn’t realize Eric’s eyes were blue until after they’d been married for 22 days, apparently he likes to keep his sunglasses on
    • He cheats on his wife with Didi Fancher,  a 40-year-old “scorched blonde”
    • He GETS SHIRTLESS!!! (yay!) And then he drops his pants and goes spread eagle for a doctor’s exam while speaking to his female co-worker who is in the room
    • Eric drinks brandy, drops the F-bomb multiple times and gets into fist fights
    • He shoots someone while driving around in his limo
    • Eric demands he get tasered, but instead drops vodka on his … er, nether regions

NOTABLE LINE: (Eric) “I like your mother. You have your mother’s breasts.” (Elise) “Her Breasts?” (Eric) “Great stand-up t*ts.”

BOTTOM LINE: This film focuses on a darker, misogynstic side of Rob we haven’t seen before. I mean, can you imagine R-Patz as a cheating, drinking, bad-boy? Marion Cotillardand Paul Giamatti have reportedly sign up to star alongside Rob. Does this mean Marion will be playing Rob’s wife? What do you think of that pairing?”

Oh HollywoodLife yes yes Marion is his wife.  Hahaha I like the pairing.  As for a misogynist – well I consider myself that anyway LOL.  And YES I can imagine Rob as a cheating, drinking, bad boy – many times – oops sorry I said that out  loud.  Please don’t let this just be a rumour.  Although I’m not sure if I survive Georges I will survive this.  Edward Cullen has well and truly left the building …
