Robert Pattinson “Waiting for the Barbarians” slated to begin shooting this fall
Ciro Guerra has been much in the news since his “Birds of Passage” opened Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes. Good news emerged today that AMBI Media Group is fully financing “Waiting for the Barbarians”. According to Variety:
Andrea Iervolino and Monika Bacardi’s AMBI Media Group will fully finance the upcoming adaptation of J.M. Coetzee’s prize-winning novel “Waiting for the Barbarians.â€
Ciro Guerra (“Embrace the Serpent,†“Birds of Passageâ€) is directing the film. AMBI Media Group will produce with Michael Fitzgerald and Olga Segura.
AMBI Group is a consortium of film development, production, finance and distribution companies wholly owned and operated by Iervolino and Monika Gomez del Campo Bacardi, Lady of Bayfield Hall, better known as “Monika Bacardi.â€
…
AMBI’s Andrea Iervolino stated, “’Waiting for the Barbarians’ is a rich story deserving of a big screen retelling, and Monika and I are very happy to join Michael and Olga to make this happen. We’re excited to get started on this production.â€
Principal photography is slated to begin this fall in Europe and North Africa.

Johnny Depp wants to join Robert Pattinson in Waiting for the Barbarians?
According to Screen Daily:
Johnny Depp has reached out to Colombian director Ciro Guerra to work with him, possibly on his next film, JM Coetzee adaptation Waiting For The Barbarians.
…
Depp would join Mark Rylance and Robert Pattinson in the project. The producers include Michael Fitzgerald (Three Burials). The film will be Guerra’s English-language debut and was first announced in 2016. It is being lined up to shoot in autumn this year.
Coetzee, a recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature, is adapting his own novel. The story is a political thriller published in 1980, about a British magistrate in a small colonial town who begins to question his loyalty to the Empire.”
Interesting that they are lining up to shoot in Autumn this year. We posted last week that Ciro Guerra was hoping to shoot at the end of 2018 in Morocco, but Autumn works for me.
Also, not sure who Depp would portray – the only two other main characters I can recall were Colonel Joll and Warrant Officer Mandel. And Rob’s character is described as “Lieutenant” … hmm. In any event, Depp isn’t confirmed, just circling so it could all just be a storm in a teacup. Stay tuned.
Robert Pattinson and Ciro Guerra filming Waiting for the Barbarians in Morocco
Ciro Guerra screened his latest film “Birds of Paradise” at Cannes yesterday during Director’s Fortnight and a few media are reporting AFP’s interview. This is what they asked about Waiting for the Barbarians:
Q: How is the next project with the British actor Robert Pattinson?
A: (WAR) It is an adaptation of the book “Waiting for the Barbarians” by JM Coetzee and we hope to start shooting at the end of the year in Morocco. It will be my first film outside of Colombia and in English.
Robert Pattinson’s Upcoming Projects
Â
I tweeted today that The King has finally been removed from Rob’s IMDbPro page. It’s not a surprise to me because I believe Justin Kroll when he said that Rob wasn’t involved given he had the exclusive on Joel Edgerton. IMDb | IMDbPro isn’t 100% accurate at the best of times, but I thought I’d take this opportunity to reflect on the projects in development currently listed on Rob’s page:
The Lighthouse (Robert Eggers)
Robert Pattinson said he was excited about his next project and “excited to be in a horror movie by Robert Eggers.â€
Rob is currently in Nova Scotia with William Dafoe. The film is currently in pre-production and filming is rumoured to commence on Monday 9 April 2018 and scheduled to finish around 11 May 2018. We also know they have finalised the building of the lighthouse (see pic above) and the roads are now closed off from the general public. It’s currently slated to be released in 2019.
The Souvenir: Part 2 (Joanna Hogg)
Not much is known about The Souvenir: Part 2 other than filming is supposed to start in the summer of this year and that Rob will have a leading role. Part 1 is currently post production as at 22 October 2017, but we should know next Thursday (12 April 2018) if it is in fact going to Cannes as has been rumoured.

Robert Pattinson will play a Lieutenant in Waiting for the Barbarians
Â
IMDbPro changed Rob’s character name in Waiting for the Barbarians to “Lieutenant” rather than “Colonel Joll” which means perhaps they’ve merged characters for his role. Also, a few articles have popped up in Mexican papers over the past 24 hours, thanks to its producer Olga Segura, mentioning filming this year. The Mexican Herald is reporting:
“Waiting for the Barbarians”, the acclaimed novel of South African Nobel Prize winner John Maxwell Coetzee, will be taken to the movies by a Mexican.
Olga Segura will produce the project, which will be shot this year at a site to be determined in Africa.”
Whilst Noti Cine is saying:
The filming of the film is scheduled to begin this year and will take place in Chile.
Well it’s being filmed somewhere so hopefully it will be in 2018.

Robert Pattinson talks films and his craft with Emilie Kefalas
Â
SCAD District interviewed Rob during the festival last year and and just uploaded it for our listening pleasure. Rob talks about his movies (mentions his song in Damsel), directors he’s worked with and will work with (mentions working with Ciro Guerra in 2018 clapshands) and more. Almost 10 unadulterated minutes with Rob. They also posted the new photo below and which I’ve cropped above.
