Christopher Nolan Talks Robert Pattinson Driving Skills & Bungee Jumping in Tenet

imgbox

With the release of Tenet on DVD/Bluray/4K in the US, Christopher Nolan talks with USA Today. Below is the excerpt concerning comments about Rob:

Question: So how did you tell John David Washington and Robert Pattinson that they’d actually be bungee-jumping onto a tall Mumbai building?

Christopher Nolan: I left that to George Cottle, our stunt coordinator, who came up with the idea of actually bungee jumping up the building, which was pretty spectacular, and I added it to the script. He said to them, “We want you to do the first half of this yourselves and actually launch you into the air over the street.” They trusted him to find a way to do that and I think they actually had fun at the end of the day.

Q: Robert Pattinson is so believably self-deprecating about his driving. How was he behind the wheel, really?

Nolan: Rob was assessed by the stunt teams as a talented driver. We were able to get him do a lot of his closeups using a mounted camera. So he and John David would be in the car with cameras mounted on the side. We were also able to achieve a number of shots with different techniques in the sequence, but there are a couple of really hair-raising shots where Rob’s in the driver’s seat. What’s actually happening is there’s a stunt driver behind his head – facing the other way. And the entire shot is filmed in reverse. We’re able to get the camera right in on him as the driver, even though he’s actually the passenger, moving backwards.

Christopher Nolan Talks Robert Pattinson, Tenet & Possible Sequel with ET

If you were on social media today you may have seen Christopher Nolan’s reaction to Warner Bros release their 2021 films simultaneously in cinema and on demand. ET took the opportunity to speak with both Nolan and John David Washington via Zoom whilst there appear to be doing a mini junket for the LA release. In the interview Christopher Nolan mentioned Rob and quite possibly did not close the door on a sequel to Tenet. Here’s what he had to say, but be warned if you have not seen the film it contains ***SPOILERS*** so stop reading.

Soon, everyone who wants to will be able to see Tenet — some for the first time, some on repeat watch. This is a movie that really calls for repeat viewings to fully take everything in. Do you have a message for those viewers diving back in, a piece of rewatch advice or something they should focus on this time?

… With Rob, there’s a lot of layers to what he’s doing that if you watch it again, you see a very different performance the second time, which is really fun. I love working on films where if you’re interested to watch it again, there’s something else to be found there.

In the end, Neil tells the Protagonist he is only halfway through his story. Conceivably, there is more to explore in this world. Is there more you want to tell? Or is this Tenet chapter closed for you?

Nolan: The only honest answer to that is that every film I’ve done, you try to put everything you can into the one movie, but you like to create a world that lives on in the mind of the audience, lives on in my mind, all the rest. Sometimes you’re drawn to revisiting that, sometimes you’re not. A lot of it is to do with the audience response. It’s up to the audience to tell us what they make of it and what they’re interested in. I mean, certainly the possibilities are there.

Robert Pattinson and IMDB Lists for 2020

imgbox

Rob seems to have made quite a few lists on IMDb this year.

Col Needham, Founder and CEO of IMDb listed Tenet as his no. 1 movie for 2020:

“#1 No spoilers, do not worry. I had extremely high expectations for the latest movie from Christopher Nolan as the director of all-time #2 favourite movie, Inception (2010) especially as Tenet had been billed as a kind of spirtual sequel. I was not disappointed.

The viewing experience was further enhanced because it was the first film I had seen in a cinema since March due to the pandemic.”

It also made no. 9 on What IMDb Staff are Thankful for this year thanks to Col. Meanwhile, Keith Simanton, IMDb’s Senior Film Editor had Tenet as No. 2 of his fave 2020 movies.

In Top 100 Stars of 2020 Rob came in at no. 51 as one of the stars who stole the spotlight this year:

“This group of stars charted on IMDb’s annual Top 100 list in 2020, achieving high rankings on the IMDbPro’s weekly STARmeter chart throughout the year. STARmeter rankings are based on the actual pageviews of IMDb’s more than 200 million unique monthly visitors.”

And both Batman and Tenet made the 2020 Most Viewed Trailer List coming in at 2 and 4 respectively.
