Starring Robert Pattinson as the eponymous superhero alongside Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, the gritty take on DC’s caped crusader fights off last week’s record-breaking Number 1, earning its place based on digital downloads only.

Deadline: ‘The Batman’ First Week Viewership On HBO Max Bigger Than Streamer’s Theatrical Day & Date Titles – CinemaCon

Here’s some great news as CinemaCon kicks off today, underscoring the value of a 45-day theatrical window.

Not only can Warner Bros. celebrate racking up $750 WW and $365M stateside at the box office on Matt Reeves’ The Batman before the pic’s April 18 debut on HBO Max, but the DC movie’s first week viewership in Smart TV U.S. households at 4.1 million beats the first seven days of such HBO Max/Warner Bros. movies The Suicide Squad ($3.5M), Wonder Woman 1984 (3.2M), The Matrix Resurrections (3.2M) and Dune (2.3M) — all of which were same day theatrical day-and-date movies last year under Warner Bros. pandemic release plan. Batman‘s first week is the second best for a theatrical movie on HBO Max after New Line’s Mortal Kombat (4.3M). The Batman‘s first week was even bigger than Zack Snyder’s Justice League which pulled in 2.2M U.S. households, that pic a direct to HBO Max title.

Of the top 25 largest markets for The Batman in Live+6 day, Samba TV reports that Sacramento, CA over-indexed the most (+31%), followed by Philadelphia, PA (+26%) and Portland, OR (+22%).

Again, a positive sign here on Batman on HBO Max, demonstrating that when a studio creates a cultural event out of a movie, it trickles down into other ancillaries, enabling the IP to thrive. Batman‘s current B.O. is $367.7M U.S., $754.3M WW.

Deadline: ‘The Batman’ Flies Past $750M At Worldwide Box Office As HBO Max Debut Dawns Tomorrow

Warner Bros/DC’s The Batman has winged its way past three-quarters of a billion dollars at the worldwide box office, maintaining its spot as the highest-grossing film of the year, globally and domestically. The worldwide cume through Sunday is $751.1M with the Matt Reeves-directed spin on the Caped Crusader counting $386.1M at the international box office and $365M in North America.

The milestone comes as the blockbuster will launch on HBO Max tomorrow (April 18), and also will air on HBO at 8 PM ET Saturday, April 23.

On crossing $750M, Jeff Goldstein, WB’s President of Domestic Distribution, said, “The incredible response we’ve seen at theaters across the country is a testament to both the enduring power of this iconic DC Super Hero and the huge appetite out there to experience great movies on the big screen. We congratulate everyone involved on reaching this impressive milestone.”

Added Andrew Cripps, President of International Distribution, “The Batman performs on every level, delivering critical praise and big crowds in every market around the globe. We’re so proud of the film and so happy it continues to strike a chord with audiences everywhere.”

The overseas Top 10 markets are the UK ($53.2M), Mexico ($30.7M), Australia ($27M), France ($25.9M), Brazil ($22.6M), China ($22.5M), Germany ($18.9M), Spain ($11.8M), Italy ($11.2M) and Japan ($10M).

Robert Pattinson’s turn in the Batsuit started offshore rollout early in Korea on March 1, and across its first weekend in 74 overseas markets bowed to $124.2M. This repped the top international opening of 2022, WB’s best pandemic-era offshore debut and its best internationally since Joker in October 2019 — as well as the 3rd biggest overseas pandemic-era debut in like-for-like markets behind Spider-Man: No Way Home and No Time To Die.

The global launch including domestic’s $134M was $258.2M, smashing WB’s pandemic-era records. The film also hit that benchmark across 62 individual markets including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK, Australia, Korea, Brazil and Mexico. The Batman further scored the biggest-ever debut for a DC film in seven markets and the biggest-ever opening weekend for a Warner Bros Pictures release in Iceland.

Deadline: ‘The Batman’ Wings Past $700M WW – International Box Office

Also from Warner Bros, The Batman winged past $700M this session, landing at $710.5M worldwide after an additional $13.4M from 76 offshore markets. The international cume is $361.5M and holds were strong in the fifth frame in some key markets including Germany (-6%), France (-27%), Italy (-28%) and the UK (-29%). The latter leads all play with $50.2M.

ScreenDaily: Tollywood drama ‘RRR’ scores third place at UK-Ireland box office as ‘The Batman’ tops £35m

The Batman held top spot for a fourth consecutive weekend, dropping just over 50% with £1.7m taking it to a £35.6m total.

It has now topped the totals of superhero films Suicide Squad (£33.63m) from 2016 and Spider-Man 3 (£33.55m) from 2007; and is coming up on Warner Bros stablemate Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice (£36.6m) from 2016 and Iron Man 3 (£37m) from 2013.

ScreenDaily: ‘The Batman’ adds $45m for $673m total

Warner Bros’ The Batman continues to erode in both North America and in international markets, but nevertheless delivered a solid global estimate of $45.5m in its fourth weekend of play, taking the total to $672.9m.

In North America, the drop for The Batman was 44%. For international, the decline was 49%, or just 42% if China is excluded.

Among international markets, UK/Ireland leads in terms of cumulative totals with $47.4m to date, ahead of Mexico ($28.0m) and Australia ($24.1m). France ($22.2m) has overtaken Brazil ($20.2m) over the past week.

The Batman has now reached 67% of the $1.01bn lifetime box office achieved by The Dark Knight, and 62% of the $1.08bn grossed by The Dark Knight Rises.

ScreenDaily: ‘The Batman’ tops £32m at UK-Ireland box office as ‘Jujutsu Kaisen 0’ draws audiences

Warner Bros’ The Batman comfortably held on to top spot at the UK-Ireland box office, adding £3.3m to reach a £32.6m total; on a weekend when Sony anime Jujutsu Kaisen 0 was one of the strongest performers.

The Batman dropped 54.8% on its previous session – par for the course this weekend, with sunny weather across much of the UK and Ireland restricting box office takings.

Among superhero films, The Batman has topped 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok  (£31.1m) and Spider-Man: Homecoming (£30.7m), and is coming up on 2018’s Deadpool 2  (£32.9m) and 2007’s Spider-Man 3 (£33.6m).

Deadline: ‘The Batman’ Swoops In On $600M WW, Unflappable Despite Tough Break In China – International Box Office

Just days after Warner Bros/DC’s The Batman rounded the five-century mark globally, it is now just shy of $600M worldwide in its third weekend. A $49.1M overseas frame (down 46% versus last session) brings the international box office cume on the Matt Reeves-directed pic to $298M, with global standing at $598.1M through Sunday.

Gotham’s vigilante hero is eyeing an ultimate worldwide total north of $750M, and that will be without a significant boost from China where The Batman bowed this weekend. The opening there took the No. 1 slot with an estimated RMB 76.7M ($12.1M), including $2M from IMAX. This is the best PRC opening for Hollywood in 2022, but is not a number that incites excitement. However, as we have noted since last Sunday and beyond, the launch was expected to be inauspicious amid a Covid spike that has increasingly hit the market. Approximately 43% of cinemas are now temporarily closed, including in Shanghai and Shenzhen, among the top areas for imported films.

As we also noted coming into the weekend, the movie has strong social mojo in China with a 9 on ticketing platform Maoyan — a figure that did not shift across the frame. However, Maoyan has reduced its prediction for the full run to RMB 166.7M ($26.2M).

Given the lukewarm reception to Hollywood movies in China over the past several months, it would have been nice to see how The Batman performed had the market been firing on all cylinders. But even without a China boost, The Batman will be just fine. To wit: in like-for-likes at today’s rates, the overseas total is tracking ahead of Justice League by 9% (a title that did over $106M in China), 22% above Wonder Woman (which did $90M+ in China) and 54% over Godzilla Vs Kong (which did $189M in China). Each of those movies also had substantially shorter runtimes.

Deadline: Covid Clips ‘The Batman’s Wings In China, But Pic Not On The Wane As WW Hits $516M

Warner Bros/DC’s The Batman released in China today, getting off to an RMB 23.3M ($3.7M) start, including previews. The inauspicious bow was expected given that about 35% of the market’s cinemas have been temporarily shuttered amid a new Covid spike. The good news is that the film has a strong 9 score on platforms Tao Piao Piao and Maoyan. The latter is currently predicting an RMB 194.3M ($30.5M) final tally for the Caped Crusader’s full run.

That The Batman is being impacted by the Covid closures in China is something we already knew would happen as of last weekend when we were seeing a potential 25% hit. Since then, the impact has grown; the cinema closures in such cities as Shanghai and Shenzhen, which we understand are the top two areas for foreign movies, make this a bigger drag.

Forbes: Box Office: ‘The Batman’ Passes $500 Million Worldwide

With another $5.75 million on Wednesday, down a reasonable 19% from a $7.1 million Tuesday, Matt Reeves and Peter Craig’s The Batman has now grossed $258.2 million in North America. That twelve-day total puts it above the $251.2 million (unadjusted-for-inflation) domestic gross of Tim Burton and Sam Hamm’s Batman. With $247.5 million overseas, The Batman has now earned $505.8 million worldwide on a $185 million budget. That puts it just above Venom: Let There Be Carnage ($501 million without a penny from China) and behind only F9 ($721 million), No Time to Die ($774 million) and Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.87 billion) among pandemic-era Hollywood flicks.

Here’s a ghoulishly funny stat: The Batman is now the biggest-grossing movie ever made, in North America and worldwide, about a serial killer. Yes, Paul Dano’s Riddler is essentially Se7en’s John Doe cosplaying as a mix of Jigsaw and the Zodiac killer (with a dash of Hush from the 2000’s Batman comics), and the Robert Pattinson/Zoe Kravitz thriller has out-grossed both Se7en ($327 million worldwide in 1995) and Hannibal ($350 million global in 2001). If you want to count inflation, it’ll be past Hannibal ($165 million domestic in 2001/$266 million adjusted) by tomorrow and Silence of the Lambs ($131 million in 1991/$284 million adjusted) over the weekend.

Variety: ‘The Batman’ Sets Sights on $500 Million at Global Box Office

The Batman” is nearing a significant box office milestone.

The newest superhero adventure, starring Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader, has generated $463 million globally, putting the Warner Bros. film within striking distance of $500 million, an important benchmark given its $200 million price tag. In non-COVID times, half-a-billion dollars would be an expected and relatively insignificant threshold for a big-budget comic book adventure. That’s especially true for a movie based on one of the most well known Spandexed heroes around.

Yet audiences have been turning out in force to see “The Batman,” which co-stars Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman and Paul Dano as the Riddler. Directed by Matt Reeves, the three-hour-long film takes a grim, gritty look at Bruce Wayne’s earlier days as “the world’s greatest detective.”

Over the weekend, “The Batman” added another $66.6 million international and $66 million domestically. Those revenues bring the film’s tally to $224.7 million overseas and $238.5 million in North America.

“The Batman” opened this weekend in Japan with $3.2 million, enough for the No. 1 spot. Outside of North America, the top-earning territories are United Kingdom ($35 million), Mexico ($20.2 million) and Australia ($16.7 million). The movie opens next Friday in China. [My emphasis]

Deadline: The Batman’ Powers To $238M+ US Cume By Sunday; Pic Already At $400M WW Today – Saturday Update

Warner Bros.’ The Batman, as expected, is leading the weekend box office in what is expected to be a three-frame No. 1 streak with a very healthy hold of -51% and $66M, on its way to $238.5M by Sunday. Already, the Matt Reeves directed movie is over $400M WW. Yesterday clocked $18.7M, -47% from last Friday (-67% if you compare against pic’s first Friday+previews).

That hold beats that previous DC movies’ second weekend declines of Batman v. Superman (-69%), and Dark Knight Rises (-61%), Justice League (-56%) and The Dark Knight (-53%).

RelishMix noticed the post-social chatter on the DC movie, reporting that it “runs positive as doubts are extinguished with cast choices applauded for Robert Pattinson’s performance as an all-time best Batman performance, while fans continue to adore Nirvana’s music in the film, which was inspiration for Matt Reeves as he was writing the film.” YouTube videos popped most on social digital, adding 20.6M views for studio-owned and earned materials over the week. Official social pages for the film added 282K new fans, notably on Instagram, with Twitter and Facebook pages now totaling 1.3M for The Batman. (My emaphsis)

Screen Daily: ‘The Batman’ dominates UK-Ireland box office with £13.5m opening weekend

Warner Bros’ blockbuster The Batman dominated the UK-Ireland box office on its opening weekend, with a £13.53m three-day session coming in as the third highest of the last two years.

Playing in 709 locations, the film took an average of £19,086 per site. Its £13.5m three-day figure is only behind No Time To Die  (£21m) and Spider-Man: No Way Home  (£19.5m).

The full opening is to be confirmed, with Imax still to report figures from its previews on Thursday, March 3.

The Batman’s opening is ahead of the first two of Christopher Nolan’s trio – Batman Begins with £4.4m and The Dark Knight with £11.2m – and only slightly behind The Dark Knight Rises’ £14.3m.

It also tops the £12.6m three-day start of 2019’s Joker, giving The Batman the highest opening for a 15-rated title ever in the territory. 2015’s Fifty Shades Of Grey is the only 18-rated title to have opened higher – marginally ahead with a £13.56m first weekend.

Joker went on to an enormous £58.3m total; Warner Bros will hope that The Batman can hold similarly well.

The Batman’s dominance of both screens and ticket sales affected the takings of several other titles on release, from genre stablemates to family titles.

UPDATED: Warner Bros’ The Batman has opened strongly in North America and international territories, with a domestic confirmed opening of $134m and an estimated $124.2m for 74 foreign markets. The numbers combine for a $258.2m global debut.

In North America The Batman’s number is the second-biggest of the pandemic era, behind only Spider-Man: No Way Home’s $260.1m. The Batman is only the second film since December 2019 to open above $100m in the domestic market.

Comparisons for international are harder to frame, since opening release patterns have notably varied from title to title in the pandemic era – but The Batman’s debut is certainly behind No Way Home’s $340.8m international launch. The Batman missed out on box office from Russia, as Warner Bros and all the other major studios have now withdrawn from the territory.

In third place, Australia brought in an estimated $9.2m – likewise the second-biggest opening of the pandemic era in that territory.  Brazil came fourth with $8.8m – the second biggest of the pandemic era. [My emphasis]

Variety: ‘The Batman’ Flies Even Higher With $134 Million Debut at Domestic Box Office

The Batman” landed a bigger opening weekend than Warner Bros., the studio behind the comic book adventure, initially expected.

The newest superhero epic, starring Robert Pattinson as an exceptionally moody Caped Crusader, collected $134 million in North American theaters over the weekend, above Sunday’s estimates of $128.5 million.

Those ticket sales rank as the best opening of 2022, as well as only the second pandemic-era movie to cross the $100 million mark in a single weekend following “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”

The reason behind the 4% bump in Monday’s final tally is because “The Batman” had a better-than-expected turnout on Sunday, bringing in $34.1 million. That’s more than some pandemic-era releases managed to earn in their entire theatrical runs. The movie pulled in $57 million on Friday — which includes fan events from Tuesday and Wednesday — and added another $43.2 million on Saturday.

Variety: The Batman’ Grabs $4 Million Box Office Opening in Korea

South Korean cinema audiences turned out to see “The Batman” but little else over the weekend. That activity put “The Batman” firmly on top of the weekend box office chart, but it left overall business at deeply depressed levels.

“The Batman” earned $2.01 million between Friday and Sunday according to data from the Kobis data service operated by the Koran Film Council (Kofic). Over its full five-day opening period since Wednesday the film earned $4.24 million. That included the year’s biggest opening day (Wednesday) when the film sold over 190,000 tickets.

Over the weekend proper “The Batman” enjoyed a 67% market share, which points to a nationwide weekend aggregate of just $3.02 million, one of the slowest weekends of 2022.

Robert Pattinson’s pitch-black superhero adventure “The Batman” collected a mighty $128.5 million from 4,417 North American theaters in its box office debut, marking the best opening weekend of 2022 by a landslide. More impressively, it’s only the second pandemic-era movie to cross the $100 million mark in a single weekend, a feat first achieved by “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and its huge $260 million launch in December.

Thanks to positive reviews, strong reception from ticket buyers and high levels of intrigue to see Pattinson’s moody take on the Caped Crusader, “The Batman” is shaping up to be a commercial winner for Warner Bros. That’s good news because the studio shelled out a hefty $200 million to produce the film and spent many millions more in marking and distribution costs. Bringing Batman to the big screen doesn’t come cheap, and achieving profitability won’t be easy.

At the international box office, “The Batman” earned $120 million from 74 overseas market, taking its global tally to a strong $248.5 million. Warner Bros. pulled the movie’s release in Russia following the country’s invasion of Ukraine last week.

“It’s fun to see the public really embrace the movie,” says Jeff Goldstein, the president of domestic distribution at Warner Bros. “Since the movie is three hours long, it became appointment viewing. That bodes well for its run on the big screen. It helps that the word of mouth is so strong.”

THR: Box Office: ‘The Batman’ Soars to Bedazzling $128.5M Opening

The Caped Crusader is back.

The Batman — starring Robert Pattinson in his first turn as the brooding crime fighter — flew to a huge $128.5 million in its domestic box office debut to secure the second-best opening of the pandemic era behind 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. It’s also director Matt Reeves’ biggest opening to date, and is only the second picture since December 2019 to cross $100 million in its launch.

Overseas, the $200 million tentpole opened to $120 million from 75 markets for a worldwide start of $248.5 million (more on this later).

The Batman‘s early performance is all the more impressive considering it runs nearly three hours and, as well as being on the darker side. Nor was Reeves’ vision for the superhero a sure bet. It’s safe to say the pic’s strong opening launches a new Batman franchise for Warner Bros. and DC at a critical juncture for legacy Hollywood studios, who are growing ever more reliant on mega-tentpoles and known IP. (Also, Warners is on the brink of having a new owner, Discovery.)

The Batman‘s opening cements the supremacy of the superhero genre at a time when many genres are struggling on the big screen. Younger males — who have so far fueled the fragile box office recovery — turned out in force and weren’t put off by the movie’s nearly three-hour running time or its darker themes. More than 65 percent of ticket buyers were male, while more than 60 percent of the audience was between ages 18 and 34.

    Those figures are fantastic and so well-deserved. Congrats to everyone involved in The Batman. It's so great that true Batman fans are loving this movie as much as (if not more) than any other. It's equally as great that Matt Reeves has managed to convince people like me that Batman movies can be made that appeal to a much broader audience than they ever have before. Bravo!

    Saw a Screen Rant tweet that was quoting WB President:

    "Future DC movies will be filmmaker-driven like #TheBatman, according to WB president Toby Emmerich.

    "Quality is the most important factor for a studio, and the biggest thing you can do to influence quality is the filmmaker that you hire."

    RP's wish is fulfilled. Hear him talk about lack of quality-centric studio films in 2012! Video: starts around 9 min mark and 10 min is where he talks about Ledger and The Dark Night,

    Rob talked about changing the industry from within during Twilight Apple Store – Meet the Director with Catherine Hardwicke and Rob back in 2008. I have it quoted somewhere on RPAU. He said the only way you can change the industry is from within and that's what he was hoping he would be able to do. Screen Rant took that quote from either Variety or THR that I linked. Or it may have been from Deadline, but I read it in one of the trade articles this morning.

    Yes, Reeves not only made this appeal to a much broader audience but also took a gamble making this batman-centric which is so much more difficult. Other classic Batman movies rely heavily on Bruce Wayne part as a buffer to make the movie interesting, mostly because I think they don't know how (or are afraid) to develop and use an actor exclusively in that suit. Pretty brave of Reeves to get away from that crutch (and sure the results get rewarded and not the effort or the motivation) but looks like, he has largely succeeded and with RP's skills.

    Finally saw it two times in three days! Second time was much better in filling the gaps and looking for other details missed in the first. With Rob in that suit all the time, it could all have been stiff and cartoonish but it was not. He gave it all making every frame fluid, interesting, and appropriate. Zoe actually says this in an interview (she is astute for noting that). The length did not matter because the pace is always go, go, go from the start. Second time, I could see the batman arc Matt was going for more clearly and it is actually pretty clever and fits with a second year evolution of batman.

    Oh, lot of chatter about a sequel and the Court of Owls as villains. I think that has the most potential to develop and integrate a rich Bruce Wayne into this current batman as his accomplice. Funny thing happened after we saw the movie the second time — taking a walk on a nearby trail, we saw a huge owl sitting in a tree (I have pictures, 🙂 ), pretty unusual. Is it a sign? LOL.     This is the video where Zoe mentions that about Rob overcoming the limitations of his suit/cowl. @7:25+ Also brave of Matt to attempt this batman-centric version as I commented above. If it were not for Rob it would have been a stiff animated character in the midst of all that was trying to be real — would not have worked.
