CRIES.   According to Gossip Cop:

Idol’s Eye, starring Robert Pattinson and Robert De Niro, has been canceled, Gossip Cop exclusively confirms.

Here’s an exclusive statement from producers to Gossip Cop: “Due to the criteria for financing not being met by producers, Benaroya Pictures has formally decided to discontinue financing the motion picture titled IDOL’S EYE.  The company cannot continue to put its investment at risk and has been forced to stop cash flowing the production.”

It continues, “This is something all of us wanted to avoid, but due to the producers missing a number of financing criteria deadlines that were mutually established by all parties, we were left with no other options. Benaroya Pictures plans to retain the rights of the film and move forward with production on the picture after we generate a revised script and assemble a new filmmaking team.”

On Monday, speculation that the movie’s future was in doubt spread after the actor Shane Daly tweeted, “Bad news morning… turns out that #IdolsEye, the Robert De Niro film has been cancelled. No reasons as of yet. @IdolsEyeFilm.”

A rep for Daly later confirmed to Gossip Cop that he was informed early Monday that Idol’s Eye isn’t going forward now. Idol’s Eye was set to begin filming in Toronto, where Pattinson arrived a couple of weeks ago. Daly is listed on IMDb as playing “Officer Jones” in Idol’s Eye. The movie, directed by Olivier Assayas, was set to star Pattinson, De Niro, Rachel Weisz, with a plot inspired by the true story of a crew of thieves who try to rob a pawn shop, only to learn it’s a front for a brutal crime boss.”

The only words I have is that this happened to The English Patient the day before filming was to commence and a few weeks later they were back to filming.  And we saw how that turned out.

🙁 definitely not the news we like waking up to.

I’m loving those words Maria, keeping everything tightly crossed. Thanks for the update.

Thanks so much for the update Maria and I can’t thank you enough for the upbeat way you ended it – of course I’m disappointed it’s not taking place right now but I truly believe it WILL happen and so we wait but in the meantime Rob has so so much ahead of him. This journey supporting him with you all here is one incredible ride and I wouldn’t have it any other way. xox

I must say this was something I didn’t expect at all. But these things happen in the movie industry as you reminded us all Maria and thank you very much for that. I actually didn’t know that about The English Patient so I’m very hopeful that the movie will be made.

LOL – that superb gif almost makes up for the disappointing news. Shit damn and fuck! Why does it always have to come down to money?! Can’t imagine how the cast must feel – I suppose they’re used to living with these kinds of setbacks and disappointments in this fickle industry. Maria, your wishes seem to come true a lot of the time, so wave your fairy dust and see if you can make magic happen! (and Jules? Beautiful new banner! So exciting – 6 years!!!!)

I’m going to go away for 5 minutes and give them a chance to put it back the way they found it. No questions asked. OK?

@Carmel I’ll be very surprised some other financiers don’t come in and pick up the pieces. This is Hollywood – it’ll all makes sense after you’ve watched Maps lol.

@maria I must say I do love your optimism. And I’m sure you’re right. Hollywood is such a strange place, alien even. But it’s still hard to believe that even with such huge names attached they couldn’t finance it *shakes head in disbelief*.

OK. I’ve thought about it. I will chip in life savings. Where do I mail my $5?

@Maria – I hope you are right. I really really really hope you are right

@ephie depends on where they were getting the financing. It could only be one aspect of it that’s fallen through. With The English Patient they were nervous about Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes. They apparently wanted Demi Moore instead and when that didn’t happen money was pulled. It took them a few weeks but they got the financing. Time will tell whether it will happen as quickly, but it happens a lot more than we usually know. I only know this information about The English Patient because I knew the Assistant Director and we were talking about Juliette about 5 years ago. Otherwise we’d all be none the wiser.

Yesterday I was so upset I cannot even say… I know things like this happen every day but I so hope you’re right Maria. I still have hopes too… especially after seeing Robert still wearing his moustache and being in Toronto…
