Cosmopolis Makes Another 2012 List – Moviefone’s 10 Best Films You Didn’t See
I’m not going to post all the lists that Cosmopolis makes because it’s making quite a few and to be honest I would be preaching to the choir here. But what I did find interesting was Moviefone’s opening comment “National averages suggest that most Americans watch three movies a year in theaters. Unfortunately, that means a lot of great films never end up getting seen.” Three movies per year? Of course seeing Twilight films 10 times doesn’t obviously alter the national average, but explains why it’s going gangbusters. Needless to say – I preferred seeing Cosmopolis 6 times and not have it been a blockbustre than have to sit through BD2 again. Shock horror I know.
And here is what Moviefone’s Drew Taylor said about Cosmopolis:
“There seemed to be a little juice behind Canadian director David Cronenberg’s latest effort, a wonderfully meandering adaptation of Dom DeLillo’s novel of the same name that charts a single, seemingly endless limousine ride. For one, the film premiered at Cannes, to mostly ecstatic audiences (full disclosure: I was in one of them), and for another, Cronenberg loaded his bizarre contraption with a secret weapon: Robert Pattinson. As a disaffected billionaire, Pattinson showed unheard of gravitas and wit, both of which were sorely missing during his five-movie tenure as sparkly vampire Edward in the “Twilight” movies. But not even his handsome or borderline hieroglyphic face, could get people to come out to “Cosmopolis.” Granted, the movie is pretty weird. But it’s also tremendously rewarding — it works its hooks into you and, months after seeing it, I still can’t stop thinking about it. It’s also part of 2012’s great limousine ride double feature, along with Leos Carax’s equally strange “Holy Motors.” The mini-bar optional.”
Yep … sorry but I know I didn’t miss this great film experience, but I know of one I wish I had (contrary to popular opinion).
PS for Aussies: If you want to see another great film and understand why Rob wanted to work with David Michod – Animal Kingdom is screening Sunday night (9 Dec) at 9.30 pm on Channel Nine (check your local guides). It’s a wonderful Australian cast and I don’t think you will be disappointed. I can’t wait for The Rover.

If you took Rob out of the equation, I don’t think I would see 3 movies a year at the cinema.
I am enjoying seeing Cosmo get on all these lists. It seems many of the people that matter did see it and are correctly singing its praises.
Thanks for the Animal Kingdom tip Maria. I have been meaning to watch this since it came out. Just one of the many movies I miss obviously. I’ll make sure I catch it this time
Cindy
Fantastic, Thanks Maria . and viewing number 6 last night for this brilliant movie and about 5 for the citizens of Cosmopolis doco. So brilliant and insightful into the world of David Cronenbergs movie making brilliance.

Makes me just SO very happy to see Cosmopolis on all these lists. It deserves all the praise in the world. Especially love this part “it works its hooks into you and, months after seeing it, I still can’t stop thinking about it.” Ain’t that the truth, cannot say enough wonderful words about the film & Rob’s performance – EVER!
Completely agree with you Maria re: Animal Kingdom. I watched on Thursday & all I can say is WOW. Fantastic cast, fantastic performances & such a gripping story line. I cannot wait for The Rover even more now.
Maria
@carmel you should see it – it’s a gritty Aussie film and Jackie Weaver is marvelous in her role as is entire cast.

@Maria -I was very aware of the movie and the buzz it was receiving at the time. For some reason I have always had an interest in film, even though I never seem to find the time to go see anything.
Somehow though, time magically appears when Rob is involved. Weird, that.
I will most definitely tape Animal Kingdom and watch it ASAP.
Michelle
It’s so GOOD Carmel. That’s all I’ll say as I don’t want to spoil, but you won’t be sorry you watched that’s for sure!
Know what you mean, when Rob is involved, everything else goes out the window 🙂

Thanks Maria ~ I was thinking a purchase might be in order. Can’t wait to watch it uninterrupted. No wonder it won/was nominated for so many awards. The casting was brilliant. It’s amazing how watching AK got me so excited for The Rover!

Can I ask a really stupid question here? ….I’ve never heard of the expression “hieroglyphic face” – I’m going to assume it means expressive or readable maybe? Does anyone actually know & can you fill me in please?! Sorry, it’s just really bugging me that I don’t know what they mean by that! (maybe then the “borderline” bit will make sense to me?) This is not a critique – just purely I’ve never heard that expression applied to someone’s face before!
