It’s late and it’s been a full day and we have 2 more days to spend with The Holy Trinity and to be honest we really were too gobsmacked to take down notes. I mean – we had Rob, David & Guy sitting 2 feet in front of us. What would you focus on?
So here some quick little points that we will add to tomorrow, after we’ve had a sleep and realise it wasn’t a dream:
The MC Seth from Roadshow was introducing each as they came in. First to come in was Liz. Somehow Rob appeared and walked on stage – as Vertigo remembers it:
1. Rob cheekily enters the stage before his name is called and giggles like he’s done something naughty.
2. Hardly any re-writes for Rey
3. Discovering Rey was instinctive.
4. Vodka consumption mentioned a couple of times, but Guy killed that with saying he was only joking
5. Rob really loved the landscape of the desert
6. It was a special crew. It was very harsh where they were but having everyone on location created a unity. No one fell out with each other. It was amazing.
7. Rob on Rey’s accent – the accent evolved from the page. It kind of happened. There was a rhythm. It was the performance that brought forward the accent. He also said he didn’t spend a lot of time on perfecting it that David let him go at first even though noone could t understand anything he was saying at first. Also Rob mentioned how people say that his accent in the movie is the worst Australian accent they’ve heard. He thinks the Australian accent is staccato and that the southern accent is more lilting. David said in relation to ADR he made Rob redo the entire movie but then realized that the performance was perfectly captured on set as it was more organic.
8. Rob had been trying to get into Aussie movies before. The Aussie film industry is vital.
9. Rob remembers that it wasn’t Pretty Girl Rock in the original script that Rey was singing, he said he thought it was the Pussycat Dolls.
Update:
10. David mentioned what an incredible experience Cannes was. How you don’t realise that when you go to your own premiere – the limo comes and picks you up from your hotel, you get a police escort to the red carpet and then you’re there all of a sudden.
11. David also mentioned that when he first hit it big with Animal Kingdom he did the 400 obligatory meetings and that’s when he first met David Linde and he knew that this was someone who he wanted to work with rather than most who were just blowing smoke … . He found David Linde to be a genuine person.
12. David Linde also sang the praises of Australian film industry and that’s why he knew he wanted to be involved.
13. I also should mention that my question to the panel was something Vertigo and I heard from Liz Watts during her “In Conversation with Sophie Hyde”. Liz mentioned that David gave 20 songs to the cast that he thought would help them develop their characters. Well my recollection was that she said cast. Anyway, so I asked
“I understand from a talk I went to last week from Liz, that David gave Rob & Guy 20 songs in order to help them develop their characters and that 10 of those songs have made it into the movie. I’m curious to know from Rob and Guy which of those resonated the most with them to help them formulate Eric & Rey?” (or something like that).
The response was kind of comical because Rob & Guy looked from me to David with a “what the hell is she talking about”. I think Rob might have even said it or Guy I can’t really remember it’s a blur. David looks at me and says “I did that for Scoot McNairy actually – I didn’t do it for these two Turns to Rob and Guy and says “I don’t know why I didn’t do it for you two”. All I was thinking was – I knew I should have asked about the tattoo! I think I may have also said “Hi David” during my question. And also laughed and said “was Liz lying?” – sometimes I forget myself.
Anyway we did end up getting an amazing insight into why David prefers to give music for character development rather than have them read back stories and books. And how when he goes into iTunes to search for music he often gets lost in the “other people who listened to this bought”. It was fascinating to listen to him. Sssshhh let’s not talk about my crush alrightee.
Here’s a few of Vertigo and my pics. Some of mine are blurry sorry best we could do at the time.
Love these points so much. Maria & Vertigo, cannot say enough how thrilled I am for you both & thank you so much for sharing this amazing experience with us. Haven’t stopped grinning all day 😀

I share your sorrow, @Carin. I live in Aus but the distance from where I am to Sydney might as well be the distance to the moon.
