I just want to say up front that at no time do I, as a Robert Pattinson fan, believe that every single one of Rob’s performances be considered brilliance or oscar worthy by the film critics.  I know he’s not perfect, I know he has room to grow and improve – he’s not classically trained, he wasn’t a child actor, and he himself states that he takes on roles that will challenge him.  What I do expect though is for said reviewers to go into a film with their preconceived ideas left at the door.  You see I can’t really believe that that is what we are getting when I see comments in their reviews such as:

“That might titillate the swooning legions of Team Edward Twilight fans, but for the grown-ups, there’s not much here to bite into.” The Hollywood Reporter

“Reluctant heartthrob Robert Pattinson makes a brave stab at the immoral and manipulative Georges Duroy – the ‘Bel Ami’ of the title – and while his good looks and intense charisma may win over Twihards, the film may have a tough task finding an easy marketplace.”  Screendaily

“Poor Robert Pattinson: The weight of proving himself, in a movie that doesn’t have the words “Twilight” and “Saga” in the title, is shaping up to be heavier than a vampire’s curse.” and “Perhaps paradoxically, he has more erotic wattage when he’s playing wan Victorian valentine Edward Cullen, his character in the Twilight movies. ” [This comment alone makes me think she is a Twihard]  Movieline

You know what – all I read now is blah blah blah because I’m not interested in your preconceived notions of who might like this film.  And really one of the reviews seemed more like a personal attack on Rob than a review of his performance – a little too much psychobabble if you ask me.

I’m not turning up expecting to see Edward – I’m turning up to see what ROBERT PATTINSON has done with this character.  I might like it – I might not and guess what – I’m not a teenager nor a Twihard – it’s quite possible that you can be a Robert Pattinson fan and not fit into those pigeonholes.  I guess what you are trying to imply is that we are far and few between – yet somehow the success of Water For Elephants seems to be ignored.  Oh wait that’s right they don’t consider it a success.  Excuse me whilst I go and check the takings compared to cost of production again.

Thank you @Maria and Martha you have said it well .And as for you “talentless Hacks” who wrote those reviews well when was the last time David Cronenberg called you? What’s that? He hasn’t and probably never will.

  • Maria
    Posted on February 18, 2012

@Cindy I can’t wait for them to compare Eric Packer to Edward Cullen too … yes yes let’s all just ignore Tyler Hawkins, Jacob Jankowski and Georges Duroy shall we.

I’ve decided that between all these gorgeous photos AND hearing Rob speak so beautifully at the press conference AND seeing so many sensational snippets of the actual movie AND listening to his co-workers’ high praise …….well. I just don’t have time to read any more stupid reviews, so I won’t be clicking on the links! Thanks for doing the dirty work for us Maria ~ consider it taking one for the team!!!

Thanks Ladies, for the awesome coverage of the last few hours …… its been so good to see and hear him again!

And one comment to the biased reviewers: perhaps you should have taken your heads out of your asses before watching the film.

I completely agree girls – SPOT ON & HERE HERE!!!!

These ‘reviewers’ really do make my blood boil. I couldn’t care less about their opinion, never take any notice of reviewers & never will, I prefer to form my own opinion but I HATE how they slam Rob at any & every opportunity. He does not deserve that, not at all. Who the hell are they to judge? Like you said Cindy, has Cronenberg called them lately – ah NO. In their freakin’ dreams.

Exactly Maria, you expect them to give Rob a chance & leave their preconceived ideas outside. Why the hell do they have to bring Edward & Twilight into EVERYTHING. Why are they comparing these films, why the hell can’t they separate Rob from Edward. They don’t even bother to try, they just love to hate on him & won’t even give him a chance. Ugh I really LOATHE these people. Open up your eyes & stop being so blind. I am NOT a Twihard, I am NOT a teenager & I resent the fact that people think that all of Rob’s fans fit into those categories. I won’t be reading your reviews in full, wouldn’t waste my eyesight on such CRAP.

Rob is brilliant, Rob is talented as hell – THAT IS ALL.

LOL @Sue for Rob … I’ll always take one for the team.

It’s been a whirlwind. And can I just say here – thanks Michelle, Vertigo, Lise-Lou, Suze and Jules for an amazing amazing effort to bring us all this Rob goodness. I know when you are posting sometimes you just don’t get to appreciate all the goodness.

Just think ladies – I have more ammo for my cropalicious posts. The man is beyond gorgeous – I know we all wish him every success with this film. He so deserves it.

We sure have been treated. I look forward to sitting back & appreciating in full.

Looking forward to those cropalicious posts Maria. He sure does deserve all the success in the world. No one in the world deserves it more. If only everyone was like we are here at RPAU. The world outside here is so full of nasty & horrible.

LOVE your review of the reviewers….It’s perfect. It’s unfortunate that the Twilight baggage will probably be following Rob around for quite sometime…but I sincerely hope that ‘Cosmopolis’ goes a long way toward leaving it behind.

I take comfort in the fact that Rob will continue to select roles that challenge him and that will, eventually, distance him enough from Edward Cullen that people can see and appreciate and review him and his performances without feeling the need to drag Twilight into it.

Sometimes I wonder if they use the references just because, if their article is “tagged” that way and someone does a search for Twilight or Edward Cullen, their drivel stand a better chance of being accidentally landed on and read. Basically, they are equal to the gossip rags that recycle Rob news to get ‘hits’ because otherwise no one would bother giving them the time of day.

  • Maria
    Posted on February 18, 2012

@IM1LuckyWoman – absolutely agree re tagging their articles – pretty much the same as some of Rob’s costars who feel the need to talk about him like they really know him or name drop him to keep themselves relevant and the sites that rely on hits to generate revenue for all their advertisements placed on the blogs.

  • Carmel
    Posted on February 18, 2012

Rob doesn’t choose his roles based on the ‘marketplace’ or the ‘ swooning legions of Team Edward Twilight fans’. If that is the critism then there is really no point. Idiots.

Thank you RPAU ladies for giving us another incredible day with Rob and his art. From the bottom of my heart I thank you all.

Pfft! What do critics know? How often is it that critics loves a film and praise it no end but it’s panned the public? Their words are of no relevance to us, the dedicated fans who are intelligent enough to make our own decisions on Rob’s portrayal of Georges.
    @IM1LuckyWoman You’re comment is ‘Perfect’ 😉
I admire Rob and look forward to seeing him in his next project, not just because of the smouldering good looks, charisma, humour, accompanying interviews, etc, but because his choice of projects is so thrilling and imaginative. Above all, that’s what excites me about him and keeps me hooked.

RPAU ladies, thanks for all the work over the last few hours. I’m sure you all know how much it’s appreciated. Now, to try and catch up on it all!!

So well said Maria, this shit is really getting old. Give the guy a freaking break already and stop harping on about the Twi Saga. Seriously its totally irrelevant to this role and frankly there should be no comparison.

I am with you Martha FTA!

Honestly, I really hope all these kind of reviews go away after BD Pt2 is dead and done, but I suspect we’ll still see Rob being referenced as “Edward” in five years time, unfortunately.

I’ve said it before, I think reviewers don’t want to be seen as uncool by praising someone who’s starred in a franchise as big as Twilight. I wonder if it will just take one reviewer to cop to the fact that they think it’s a great film before all the lemmings start spouting the same thing. Perhaps a reviewer that’s actually read the book and understands the character …

Either way, whether it gets praised or panned, I’ll still be seeing it and forming my own judgements about it, like the rest of all you ladies 😉 I, er, might have to see it several times, just to be sure my opinions are cemented …

Love your work ladies! You must’ve all been very busy bringing us these pretty pictures, so THANK YOU!

I find their comments insulting. They assume we can’t see beyond Twilight. Not only do they give only preconceived ideas, they seem to very narrow minded. Who the hell are they to assume that we don’t know anything about good acting. I’m not going to bother with reviews, I’m not going to have someone tell me what I should consider to be good. I’m getting really angry writing this because these people ramble on about nothing and the more I think about it there insulted I am by their implied comments targeting Rob’s fans and Rob himself. I don’t want to waste any more time and energy on them. The evidence is in what we see not in what we should be seeing.

  • Vertigo
    Posted on February 18, 2012

How can these reviewers be taken seriously when they’ve proven that their brains are so small, they can’t even notice there’s a difference between Edward and Georges … Twi and BA … And that Rob has actually shifted genres. No really, I’m almost embarrassed for their obvious narrow mindedness and inane comments.
Their IQ is evident in what poison they spit forth, so how could they possibly understand the intricate layers of plot or even interpretation of characters. HOW?!
They can only dream of doing what Rob does, which is probably why they are stuck in the role as critics as opposed to doers.

I am so looking forward to forming my own opinion thanks, why would I need to know what some stranger to me thinks. Who gives a flying F*$K!

Maria, thanks for the great post, I agree with everything you said and I throw my fist in the air along with all the other comments here today.

Almost forgot. Everyone seen the BA Press Conference? Well that first journo who had the honour of first question had actually studied Bel Ami and congratulated them all on their character portrayal. She seemed quite impressed – so in saying that, maybe if more of the people who actually know their shit are given a platform to speak their opinion, there might be some kind of balance. Not that I care really, but the question that sticks with me is, where are they or why aren’t they being published?

  • Maria
    Posted on February 18, 2012

Exactly @Vertigo – instead Christina was asked if she’d watch a Twilight marathon or some ridiculous question like that. It might have been close to 1.00 am here in Sydney but I was still secondhand embarrased for the majority of these hacks.

Oh and sorry but I wanted to say in one of the reviews they mentioned that Georges marries the naive daughter yet I’m sure Holly mentioned that they didn’t play Suzanne as being that naive. I could be wrong like I said – it was late but …

  • Vertigo
    Posted on February 18, 2012

Oh that’s right Maria. I vaguely remember something like that about Holly’s character. Just goes to show how much these people actually paid attention.

  • Michelle
    Posted on February 18, 2012

SO true Vertigo, that first journo’s question was the ONLY valid & sensible one out of the whole press conference. The rest of the people just made me cringe with embarrassment. Why are some people allowed to speak – seriously???

Yep I remember that too re: Holly’s Suzanne. They really pay no attention at all do they.

THIS is one of the many reasons I love coming to RPAU – AMAZING post Maria, I truly couldn’t have put it better than that and everyone’s comments here have been spot on too. As a ROBERT PATTINSON FAN (yeah, I felt like shouting – I think we need to do that repeatedly before it sinks in to some people he’s NOT just Edward) I am pissed off that we are all labelled so easily. You are right, some of those so called reviews were hardly about the actual movie itself. These “reviewers” (and I use the term loosely – hey they started it with the insults) are like bullies trying to pick a fight and yes, add in as many Twi references as you can for maximum hits to your site. That’s awesome. *sarcastic thumbs up* It really feels like he is unfairly shoved under the microscope in EVERY aspect of his life and I honestly don’t get it. Leave him alone and let him get on with what he does best – being creative in SO many ways, not just in acting. I for one can’t wait to support him on this journey….

Well said @Vertigo re press questions yesterday. omg if it wasn’t so painfully embarrassing for them I would have been laughing. Seriously?? You have Christina Ricci there and you ask her if she’d watch a Twi marathon? My eyes rolled so far back in my head I could see behind me. I hope they all had a good laugh afterwards – I mean, it’s not like he can help the stupidity that seems to flow towards and surround him. o.O

Ho hum, end of moan. Thanks for everything here girls *hugs* You are all amazing and it was a pleasure to help in any way I could yesterday. A real eye opener – I don’t know HOW you do this regularly. I am in awe.

Less than a week until I see Mr Duroy and make up my own mind 😉

Just like the rest of the girls here I agree with what you said Maria. We know he is not perfect and that he is still learning. But we want to see reviews that are constructive and not biased. They really need to look beyond twilight. I was actually out earlier -went to see The Artist which btw is excellent – and I was saying the exact same thing to my friends. I welcome constructive criticism but I hate reviews that are driven by bias and lack of research. Your reference to WFE is a great example.

It’s great to come here to RPAU because we are all on the same wavelength. Thanks once again.

Good one @ephie. 🙂 I am back to say I just love that he wants to challenge himself in movie roles – he’s not content in taking the easy route in this world, like so many do. He is a wonderful actor, when given the chance, and I truly can’t wait to see his future work. I can only see him going from strength to strength. It’s very exciting!! 🙂

Thanks Jules. You are right in saying that. Rob is a true Actor. He loves the art of film making itself and he is not interested in mindless mass pleasing movies. This is why he wants to be challenged, to hone his skills and to keep learning. True artists never stop trying to perfect their art.

I’m a twihard and what is funny is that i became a fan of Rob because of Little Ashes and Remember me etc… I like the way he choose his roles and plays them. It is surprising that the journalists always compare Robs characters to Edward. There is no twiilght fan i know who wants to see Edward in another role o:) Do they really want to annilihate Rob or the hype? But i agree, when i read a review, it is like crush an actor out and not a real critic, very strange.
